albert stokes
« on: Monday 24 December 12 13:08 GMT (UK) »
I stumbled on albert stokes whilst trying to trace my dads ancestors. My dad born Duncan john stokes known as jack. he had 4 brothers george , albert known as bert, ronnie who died during second world war and ken the youngest. also one sister Betty
  their mother was Mabel Stuffins and father Albert Stokes.  I never met Uncle George who i believe was married to Ruth nor did i Meet uncle Bert who i believe was married to Millie. They had some daughters.  If anyone has information it wld be great to find out more about my late fathers family.  Mabel and Albert parted before i was born so over 60 yrs ago and though he was alive when i wasyoung i never got to meet him. so sad when families arebecome enstranged.  Hope someone can help

We aren't allowed to do lookups of the 1911 census (Copyright & legal stuff!), so I think this is Albert from the 1901 census:

Reference RG13, Piece 28877, Folio 60, Page 3
40 Aston Lane, Aston Manor, Warwickshire

Stokes, Thomas E  Head  M  30  Insurance Agent
Stokes, Selina (could be Lelina?)  Wife  F  31
Stokes, Thomas W  Son  M  7
Stokes, Selina C  Daughter  F  7
Stokes, Albert E  Son  M  4
Stokes, John W  Son  M  6 months                     all born Birmingham

Mabel gets a bit confusing?! ;D

1901 census: RG13, 2448, 37, 6
75 Cricklade Street, Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Stuffins, Henry  Head  M  40  Maltster (Foreman)  b Quorndon, Leicestershire
Stuffins, Sarah A  Wife  F  33  b Neath, Glamorgan
Stuffins, Florence  Daughter  F  14  Mother's Help  b Newark, Notts
Stuffins, George  Son  M  8  b Newark, Notts
Stuffins, Mabel  Daughter  F  5  b Newbury, Berkshire
Stuffins, Mary  Daughter  F  2  b Newbury, Berkshire

But this looks to be her birth registration?
September qtr 1896
Carlisle, Cumberland district    vol 10b, page 513
Stuffins, Mabel May
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

No help I'm sure but one of my father's best friends was a Stokes and it's not that common a name, I believe he was Bill, known as Stokey and lived in Stockingford and had attended the Stockingford Council School, that would have been about-- mmm the start of WW1? He was married but I can't remember any mention of children. Good luck.

1881 Census
2 Tallents Row,
Newark, Nottinghamshire
RG11/3377/76/2
John BERRY, 47, Head, Mar, Cotton Weaver, born York, Yorkshire
Mary Berry, 49, Wife, Mar, Charwoman, born Hathern, Leicestershire
Henry STUFFINS, 21, Un, Son in Law, Unemployed Malster, born Quorndon, Leics
Elizabeth Stuffins, 28, Unm, Daug in Law, Machinist at Home, born Hathern, Leics
Annie Stuffins, 15, Daug in Law, General Servant, born Leicester

Son/Daug in Law is another term for Step Children.
So Mary has remarried;

Marriage Reg;
Mary STUFFIN, June 1878, Newark, 7b 569
John BERRY on same page

Death Reg for Marys Husband, Father of Henry/Elizabeth/Annie;
George STUFFIN, Sept 1877, Newark, 7b 195, age 44

1871 they are under STEEFFINS in Newark, Nottinghamshire
HENRY age 11
ANNIE age 5
ELIZABETH age 18
Parents GEORGE/MARY

1861 Census Henry age 1, is with Parents GEORGE/MARY in Leicester, Leicestershire under Stuffin.
George is a Maltster born c 1832 Newick (Newark), Nottinghamshire.
Sister Elizabeth age 10 is with them.

This may be the Marriage which would make Elizabeth possibly not the Daug of George;
George STUFFIN, Sept 1855, Loughbro, 7a 165
Mary BROWN on same page.

You would need Henry Birth Cert to confirm his Mothers maiden name.

Trish :)

Something strange here with the Stuffins;
Married 10yrs in last Census, so this is the Marriage;

Sept 1900, Bridgend, 11a 1185 (Wales)
Henry STUFFINS/Sarah Anne HOPKINS

So either of them or both of them were Married before.

I cant find any of them in 1891 ::)

I had a great uncle that I was named after named Albert E. Stokes.  No middle name, just an initial.
