Harry CHANDLER left for America
« on: Friday 28 December 12 06:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
I am trying to help someone from America who is the Grandson of Harry CHANDLER b 10.8.1878 - date from US Army records. I can't find his birth on NSW BMD
He arrived in New York 1905 on the "Minnehaha" which had left London 23.9.1905 - Info from New York Passenger List.
He married Martha A ROMY and had 2 children Harry R b 1911 and Adele b 1913.
Harry left this family when Harry Junior was a small boy and they don't know what happened to him.
The grandson doesn't know Harry's parents names but is sure he was born in Sydney.
Looking for:
His birth.
Parents.
Travel to London before 1905,
Death.
Any ideas ?
Regards
Alison

Hi Alison,

Has the family been found in the New York census at all? If they can be found it might help confirm if infact Harry was born here in Australia.

And do you have any idea of his age at death?

Sorry...I re-read your initial post and I see that you don't.
That makes it difficult to find a birth, as there are more than one Harry Chandlers born in Australia.

Do you know when and where he married Martha A. ROMY?

Maybe a long shot but i wonder if this is his birth, re error in the spelling of his surname???

5311/1878  CHANTRILL  HARRY A  WILLIAM  ELIZABETH A  PADDINGTON

Might scrap the above.. there are other births reg. under the same name of Chantrill so it was obviously a proper name.

There are so many "Harry CHANDLER" entries which may be him but without parent names etc it's almost impossible to know.  Cannot see him on the UK incoming list from Australia but it's only for people who went by direct passage.  I see two crossings from NY to UK which may be him, but, of course, they don't help find him after he left his family nor give clues as to where he came from  ::)

Harry Chandler,    27
Port of Departure:   New York, New York, United States
Arrival: 5 Aug 1905 to Liverpool on the Campagnia
Listed as "English" but I guess Aussies were often listed that way at the time.  This passage would give him time to go back to NY in the September.

Harry Chandler, 28
Port of Departure:   New York, New York, United States
Arrival: Southampton 8 Jul 1906 on the St Louis
Occ: machinist.  Listed as an 'alien' but I think this ship's  list seems to put everyone who isn't from the US in that category!

There is an on-line tree which cites the 1920 US census as evidence of an 'arrival'  - presumably into US??  I do not have access to US census but someone else might.

Sorry - not really any help  :(

On top of which, his birth could also have been registered as Henry CHANDLER and there are even more of those.   :-\

That tree (if it is the one I looked at) also has a link to his draft registration card for WW1.....it lists that he was born 10th August 1878 but does not say where.   :(

It also gives his occupation as chaffeur and I think it says he was naturalised.....but I'm not sure on that. It does list his wife Mrs Martha R Chandler.
