Venus
« on: Monday 31 December 12 17:02 GMT (UK) »
My maternal grandfather was Henry Alfred Venus son of Henry Simons Venus (Regular soldier) and Emma Jane Port, Grandson of Patience Ann Cook and Thomas Venus( Greengrocer, fruiterer)

They originated from the Brighton Area of East Sussex including Chailey.

Not sure where Venus comes from?

Would like to hear from others who have this name in their tree.

Venus in family history has a few different origins depending on area
In Germanic language   can represent vogel    meaning bird ,

In Frence  comes of area Venoix in Calvados  being normanic,

Venus is of venu in latin  a    child born in the astrological rising of venus

then in greek being of the daughter of Zeus

but if u go to a library and consult an Etyptomogical or Heraldric index volume   one may have more clues....

tis a tricky one cos it was probably a psuedo name at the time it was first used....

I do have in the Simmonite family a series of children named after various parts of astrological .....   turns out the father was heavily involved in that area writing and teaching the subject....  so humour was bestowed upon his offspring  much as the hippie did in the 1960s

 :)
