Getting started on the Chisholm side of the family from Edinburgh
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 10:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to start my grandfathers family tree. He was Walter Chisholm born in Edinburgh in 1888. Married to Agnes McKinlay Loudon in the Cannongate, Edinburgh  born 05 Feb, 1888 died 1982 in Kirkwall Orkney islands. They lived in 2 Ashton Villas Brunstane Rd, Joppa Portobello Edinburgh. He was a tailor and had a shop up George fourth Bridge which was continued by his son Walter Campbell Chisholm born 13 May 1918.
If anyone can help me get started I'd be over the moon :-*

Hi,

You don't say if you know who his parent's were or not. Have you checked SP for his birth or his marriage which will have both parent's names.

Is this this family in 1901?

Address 17 Wellington Street, South Leith, Edinburgh.

James Kerr Chisholm 37 head born Edinburgh, Tailor's cutter
Elizabeth Chisholm 37 wife born Edinburgh
Mary Chisholm 14 dau born Edinburgh
Walter Chisholm 12 son born Edinburgh
Alex Campbell Chisholm 10 son born Edinburgh
Jane Thomson 47 born Musselburgh
Emily Thomson 49 born Musselburgh, Baker & Confectioner

The same family in 1891 were living 2 Murane Place

Hi

The family Sharon identified appears to be the correct one.

He died 31 Oct 1953 at 2 Ashton Villas. Aged 65 and a Master Tailor.
His parents were James Kerr Chisholm, tailor's cutter and Eliza m.s. Campbell, both deceased. Son W C Chisholm was the informant.

There is a marriage showing on SP for James Chisholm and Elizabeth Campbell in 1885, Newington, Edinburgh.  If you get this, it should give their parents' details.

Hi Akranes54

How exciting is it when you start to research!

You have lots of new info to follow up from the info by Brevitas and Sharon.

You now need to follow through, step by step. Scottish online records for the period you are now in are excellent, and when looking at pay to view records for BMDs, relatively inexpensive on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP).

From what has already been found by Brevitas and Sharon:

James Kerr Chisholm married Elizabeth Campbell in 1885 in Midlothian - you can download the cert on SP.

James Kerr Chisholm's birth, parents Walter and Mary (kerr) you can also download in 1863 Edinburgh.

Elizabeth Campbell's birth to Alexander Campbell and Mary St Leger Duncan RICHARDSON you can also download in 1863 Edinburgh.

When you are specific on Scotlands People, you can download up to 5 images for 30 units/£7GB (1 unit to search - even when you know what you need  ::) - and 5 units to download the image). Great value regardless compared to ordering English/Welsh certs!
