Yes its all very confusing.

You're dead right there!

I now have absolutely no idea who we are looking for? ???

Seems like I have wasted my time on a wild goose chase?

Hi.

Sorry I have not replied sooner.
I appear to have confused researchers. Could I be allowed to explain?
I am interested in a Henry Johns.  In the 1911 census he is living in Aldershot and is "married" to
Ellen . There is daughter Amelia Johns and a stepson Frederick.  Henry is a bootmaker and states he is 50 years old and is from St Anns, Soho, London.  Henry and Ellen never were married although he says they had been married for a year. Another daughter Doris was born 1913 but died soon after.  Henry then disappears and Ellen in 1918 marries a George Sotheran giving the name Ellen Weedon (her previous married name.) Ellen Weedon and Henry Johns were my grandparents.

Then back In the 1901 census, RG13/610/31 page 7, Henry (transcribed as Henry John) is working in Aldershot as a bootmaker. He again states he is 50 years old and that he is from London Soho

Prior to the 1901 census I cannot find Henry.  I have been trying for many months.

The Henry I was asking about in my past messages, I considered to be a possibility because of his connection with St Anns Soho in the 1891 census. This census  shows a Henry Johns (who is married to Jane and has  a son) as  living in Soho.  I had found this Henry was born in Alderney.
but came to the mainland with his brother George. (As my previous message states.) It was this Henry I was originally asking about hoping for snippets of information that may carry me forward

I am sorry if researchers think they have wasted their time but I assure them they have not.
I trust this message now clarifies the position.

Dud.

I think this is Ellen in 1901 living in Aldershot

Charles Weeden 32 b Walton Surrey 0cc looks like hotel waiter
Ellen   27 b Farnborough
Ellen E   2 months b Aldershot
Frederick Mason 28 brother in law b Farnborough
Annie Butt 23 boarder b Ireland
William Ede 22 boarder b Leeds
RG13 Piece 610 Folio 22 Page 35

Sorry - but I don't subscribe to the theory that Henry changed his birthplace - I think the Aldershot Henry is a totally different one to the Channel Islands Henry

If the chap I found in 1871 really is your man, and he was in the Army, that might explain why he can't be found in 1881 or 1891?

The regiment were in Bangalore in 1881.

Thanks all for the interesting replies.
The Henry in the army in 1871 is of particular interest and as you say this may account for him not being on the 81 and 91 census.  Also Ellen former husband Charles Weedon  was in the cavalry and stationed at the same barracks.  Did they know each other???
Somehow I had missed this Henry.  Will have to try and find the service record.

Again many thanks for your help.   Dud.
