John Henry ELSLEY (CLOSED)
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 12:55 GMT (UK) »
John Henry Elsley died 23rd October 1918 aged 24 and is buried in Whitchurch Cemetery. He the first named on the family headstone at the cemetery which indicates that he was a soldier and that his mother was Elizabeth of this town.

I can not find, (except his medal card which gave him as Gunner 114606, Royal Garrison Artillery), any other military record, even with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that he died in service.

If there is any person who may be able to help sort out as to his position with the military at the time of his death and who was his his parents

Many regards
Alf

This looks like his birth

John Henry Elsley
March quarter 1894
Whitchurch
6a 713

There is an online tree that has him, but they give his parents as John Elsley 1872 - 1953 and Eunice Heycocks 1878 - 1961. Also 9 siblings.

I wonder if he survived the war but died in the Spanish flu outbreak that followed? This happened to a member of my cousin's family.

I wonder if this is him with grandparents in 1901 - it says son, but at 60 she seems a bit too old to have a 7 year old son

RG13; Piece: 2555; Folio: 73; Page: 17.

James Elsley   71    Lab                       London
Elizabeth Elsley   60                               Whitchurch
George Elsley   36    Lab                      Whitchurch
Louisa Elsley   19                               Whitchurch
Arthur Elsley   14                               Whitchurch
John Elsley             7                               Whitchurch

Interestingly living next door are John and Eunice Elsley. I wonder if his father remarried?

Thankyou one an all for your prompt reply.
I had a look at the 1901 and 1911 census, yes some confusion over Elizabeth
I just looked at FreeBMD, John married Elizabeth Wright in 1893 then he remarried Eunice Heycocks in 1899. so Elizabeth is correct.
The military information is very much appreciated.
I can now update the information on the image of his headstone on Military Images

Once again, thank you very much.
