Murhy & Portill { all variations of spelling for Portill }
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 15:20 GMT (UK) »
:) Hi, iv'e only recently started on my mothers side of the family, so things a bit sketchy,
it seems my Murphy's could have come from Co Clare, still not to sure so i'm asking if any one out there doing Murphy ancestry has come across a Murphy connection to the surname Portill, this surname is spelt always it seems, Michael Murphy married Jane Portill in Yorkshire 1860, thier daughter Margaret Murphy was born in Middlesbrough { north east England } abt 1861, Margaret Murphy married William McIntosh 1882, William McIntosh was born West Hartlepool, Co Durham,
it seems even the McIntosh's have Irish connections as Williams grandmother in 1861 is staying with the family, she is Ann McIntosh born Co Down.
No meat on the bones here, just hoping some one out there can connect to any of this Murphy, Portill, McIntosh maternal family of mine.
All the best Derek :) ;) :D
ps from my Casey side of the family i would love to be in touch with any Comaskey, O'Brien, or Dinely, my 4x gt grandmother was Bridget Comaskey. ;)

;) Just a little more to add on my Purtill's.
The parents of Jane Purtill born Co Clare was Simon & Mary Purtill, the mother's maiden name
may have been Flannagan.
Simon & Mary Purtill's children:
Jane Purtill  married Michael Murphy  1860 Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.
Michael Purtill  married  Hannah Gleeson
Mary Purtill   married  James Wall
Bridget Purtill  married  James Coyle
James Purtill  married  Elizabeth Davis
Thomas Purtill never married as far as i know.

Any one who can connnect with this please get in touch ;)

All the Best :D

Hi

Griffiths Valuation shows the spelling Purtill occurring virtually always in West Clare, around Kilrush, but does not mention a Simon. The other two spelling variations you give do not show up in Co Clare during Griffiths Valuation.

However, look at the 1828 Tithe Applotments, where you will see a Simon Purthill in Monmore, Kilrush, Co Clare:-

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=&firstname=&county=Clare&townland=Monmore&parish=Kilrush&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=30

In the 1901 Census of Kilrush, there is mention of a 34 year old Sinon Purtill.

Looks like it might be worthwhile checking out the Kilrush area.

Cheers

Hi again

Just found an 1831 marriage in St Senan's, Kilrush, between Simon Purtell and Mary Shelly.  Take a look:-

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mccarthykathryn/kilrush_parish_records.htm

If this is your Simon - then his father's name is given as John

Cheers

:D  LH, Thanks for reply, i cant even begin to tell you how my head swims with townlands and clone's, i think my Simon Purtill is the Monmore Kilrush, Clare 1826 Purtill.

But to be honest throw in another Purtill ??? and i'm lost :'(
I know thier daughter Jane Purtill Murphy stated on several documents she was born Clare.

 ;)Hi all,

LH & any one else, would it be possible to find out if the two Purtill marriage's at
St Senan's Parish, Kilrush, Clare Feb   are related Simon Purtill to Mary Shelly
and John Purtill to Mary Lynch 1826.

Many thanks ;)

Hi

Someone going to the National Library might check to see if there is a Father's name shown on the marriage of John Purtill, when he married Mary Lynch.  A search might also reveal other Purtill siblings.

Knowing naming patterns, I'll bet John was a son of John (the father of Simon) and the different spelling of their surname is irrelevant as this regularly occurs but in this case, even Griffiths Valuation only lists one spelling in Co Clare.

Cheers
