Hi again,

Take a look at

http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/kr_evictions/kr_evictions_enclosure63.htm

where you'll see mention of two families of Purtills - headed by Simon and John - being evicted from Kilrush Union 1847-1849.  The number of children in each family is also given.

The clarelibrary.ie website contains a lot of Purtill information.

Cheers

You originally felt that Jane Purtill could have been a daughter of Simon and Mary (nee Flanagan).

1.  As your Jane married in 1860 - she must have been born sometime around 1835.

2. Simon Purtill and Mary Flanagan didn't marry in Kilrush until 27 July 1868 - so you can rule them out as the parents of Jane.

Cheers

LH & all other who have helped on this posting " Thank you for all time and kindness shown "

LH i looked at eviction list you sent and went straight to Jane & Michael Murphy's marriage certificate, { 1860 Pateley Bridge Yorkshire }

Jane Portill and Michael Murphy's age are both 20 years old.
Michael's father John Murphy is a farm labourer,  Jane's father Simon Portill a farmer
perhaps he lost his rented land and left Ireland to start again in England,
iv'e even come across a posting suggesting the name Portill could have German origins.
Hope to understand the Portill's one day and hope some one might just have alook up for me in library you suggested on Portill and Co Clare.
All the very best to all ;)

:'( Tried & tried to register :'( on Clare Library website } to use the forum to try and get answer's
on my Portill's but no luck, just cant understand why ???
If any one can help on John Purthill to see if he had two sons John & Simon, John Purthill was from Kilrush.
Simon Portill's daughter married Michael Murphy 1860 Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.
So sorry to be a bit vague on dates but Jane Portill would have been born aby 1835 in Kilrush.

Hi again

Points re the 1861 UK census of Ripon (available at freecen.org.uk):-

1. Jane (now Murphy) gives her age as 20, so born circa 1841 - this doesn't tally with your date of her birth as 1832.

2. You know Jane's father Simon was deceased before 1860 when Jane married, leaving his wife Mary a widow.  Is it possible the Widow Mary 'Porton' age 50, along with Thomas age 15 and P age 24,  staying with them at census time were in fact Jane's widowed mother and brothers - perhaps over for the wedding a short time previously?  Purtill was such an unusual name in the UK that perhaps the Enumerator recorded Porton, rather than Purtill.

3. If No. 2 is a possibility, perhaps someone more familiar with Clare genealogy could check out for you whether any of the couples named Simon and Mary Purtill had three children whose dates of birth match those given in the 1861 census, as this may give another clue.

Cheers

;) LH i did think at the time the Porton's were related to Murphy or Purtill's, your reasoning could be spot on, will give it a go :D
