Like you, I'm struggling to find James, Ann or Thomas on census under any variant of Callear/Gallear after 1871!

However, Thomas and Mary Ann's marriages are on FamilySearch and West Midlands BMD:

Mary Ann GALLEAR (19), daughter of James GALLEAR married Joseph BLAKESLEY (21), son of Samuel BLAKESLEY on 29 August 1880 at St James, Dudley.

Thomas GALLEAR (22), son of James GALLEAR married Louisa BAILEY (19), daughter of George BAILEY on 27 November 1882 at St Edmund, Dudley.

The Blakesley family is easy to find on later censuses, but I haven't spotted the others yet.  ???

I've hit a stumbling block with Robert and Eliza too.

1861 census (High Street Sedgley)
Robert Callear ~20
Eliza Callear ~21

1871 census
Robert Gallier ~30
Eliza Gallier ~31
Elizabeth ~ 11
.....

Q. If these two families are connected and Elizabeth is 11 - then where was she in 1861?  I can only find the registration of a birth of an Elizabeth Gallear in 1860 (Dudley).

No connection - I just like searching!

This is why we couldn't find Thomas  - he died young and Louisa remarried.

Where are you searching? I'm a newbie and trying to find a few trusted sources of information.

I have been using findmypast.com as I can get scanned copies of the census records and BMD records.

(and thank you!)

FindMyPast is great for census, etc!

Good free sites covering some or all of Staffordshire include

FamilySearch https://familysearch.org
FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk
West Midlands BMD http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk
FreeReg http://www.freereg.org.uk

There's a beginners' "How to" guide here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,480454.0.html which is worth reading.

Although the age is a bit iffy, I wonder whether this is James' death?

Deaths Jun 1872
GALLIAR  James
Aged 31
Dudley 6c 33

If you look at the image on FreeBMD (click on the spectacles), I think his age might actually be 34, not 31.

West Midlands BMD shows the death in Tipton sub-district, and FamilySearch has his burial on 26 March 1872 in Coseley.

I have now pin-pointed my (so far) earliest ancestor Robert (b 1761) on the 1841 census.

I only got there by taking a punt and choosing an 'unconnected' Callear living in the Stoke area (on the 1871 census) 0 guess it paid off  ;D
