Difficult to know where this tangle comes from.
However, the couple of hints given by Keith Penfold, out new chatter,  prove interesting reading.

Peter PENFOLD is listed with the family arriving in Australia (Debra above). Also listed is the youngest Stephen.

It seems about 1854 the parents, John and Elizabeth PENFOLD were converted to the Mormon Church by visiting missionaries and  along with Peter and Stephen, they embarked on the "Julia Ann" for the United States in 1854 and the ship was wrecked in Tahiti.

There  are dramatic accounts easily found.

The PENFOLDS all survived. Peter wrote a letter to his family which are noted.

The Julia Ann leaves Australia 1854

This news clip previously cited by Gerry clearly says about John PENFOLD "The proprietor being on the eve of his departure for Europe"1854

I would like to add Wade82 that the name of the mother in this particular PENFOLD family is generally acknowledged as Elizabeth .

A quick and not very thorough glance at records makes me think Wade82 is correct in thinking much of the PENFOLD family ended up back in England.
There are census sightings, Probate records etc which suggest, but do not confirm this.

Another son names Amos was born to Charles and Mary in NSW

PENFOLD Amos
1695/1839 V18391695 24A
Parents Charles  & Mary

And when he died in South Australia there was a lengthy obituary which gives a good history of Charles and family.

According to the info I have John Penfold arrived in Australia on 26th September 1838 by the AA Company
Died 23 Dec 1884 Santa Ana California
Married Elizabeth Thompson ,daughter of Samuel Thompson and Mary Crouch Lamberthurst Kent ,She died July 1860 in Oakland California USA.
Children Mission fleet listing gives to names Stephen and Maria Haus   and Peter note there was a HAUS Family on the Julie Ann this may be just a mistake in the records.
1870US Census lists Fanny Penfold adopted daughter 16,  Stephen 35 and Peter 40
Elizabeth also had a daughter born in Lamberthurst Ruth Emma she died April 2nd 1818 Stroud Australia
