Patrick Joseph Crowe (From Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland to New York City)
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 05:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for my ggg uncle Patrick Joseph Crowe born 1843 Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland who arrived in New York City on 16 June 1863 with his brother Michael John Crowe my gg grandfather I found the passenger list. My gg grandfather enlisted in the Union Navy on 7 May 1864 and through the Civil War Pension Files of my gg grandmother Mary (Morris) Crowe I been able to trace Patrick to the port of New York; but after he gets off the ship I hit a brickwall.

I found birth, marriage and death documentation on www.irishgeneaology.ie for my gg grandfather's family he had 11 siblings and his parents were Malachy and Margaret (Cregan or Creghan) Crowe. However; I can't find a New York marriage certificate or a death certificate to give me a place to start; however, I did find a New York Naval Enlistment Rendezvous for a Patrick Crowe April 1865 who signed on as a 2nd class fireman which my gg grandfather was also, but I haven't heard back from the National Archives And Records Administration regarding his records as I'm hoping there might be something in there I can use to ID him. In addition, I found a record for a Patrick Crowe in the New York City Muster Rolls for Civil War Soliders, but it is not available in the collection of New York City Muster Rolls for Civil War Soliders on familysearch.org and looking through the New York Census there are so many Patrick Crowes that picking one out is proving very difficult.

Anybody got any ideas on how to find one man among many?    Maria

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for the look ups!

The 1880 census is very interesting as gg grandpa Michael and ggg uncle Patrick had 8 sisters; Mary Catherine, Sarah, Brianna, Elizabeth, Maria, Margaret Maria, Margaret Theresa, and FRANCES!

Maria

I tried looking previously, and there seemed to be a good number of Patrick Crow(e)s who might fit, but in the interest of ruling this one in or out...

The 1880 census has them living at 90 Dean St.

This appears to be Patrick & Mary in the 1875 NY State census, also on Dean St.:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12165-142642-64?cc=1918735&wc=M9SL-4K3:333675814

It seems unusual that a female name would be spelled Francis.  There is a birth record for a male Francis Crow that seems a possible match:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDYZ-CX2

This seems to be a possible match for a widowed Mary & son Francis on the 1900 census -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSFZ-W62

Francis & Mary in 1905:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MK9X-5JB

www.italiangen.org has some Patrick Crowe deaths that might fit.

I found a Brooklyn baptism record for Francis Crowe, which lists his parents as Patrick Crowe and M. Dunne and godparents as Jno. Crowe and Lizzie Fitzpatrick.

This Patrick shows up in the 1883-1885 Brooklyn city directories - http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/pdf/bc/citydir/1883%20A%20-%20G.pdf
http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/pdf/bc/citydir/1884%20A%20-%20G.pdf
http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/pdf/bc/citydir/1885%20A%20-%20G.pdf

In the 1886 directory, Mary A. Crowe is listed as the widow of Patrick:
http://www.bklynpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/pdf/bc/citydir/1886%20A%20-%20G.pdf

So I think the death on www.italiangen.org that would fit for this Patrick would be 12 Jun. 1886 in Kings Co. at age 49.

Mary & Francis appear to be in Brooklyn in 1910:

Following on from those fabulous finds by Shelly - The 1880 Census actually shows a few more people other than the Crowe Family. John P Dunne appears to be the brother of Mary.

Patrick J. Crowe 35  Mary A. Crowe 37  Francis Crowe 1
Denis F. Regan 34  Catharine Regan 30 John D. Regan 3
John P. Dunne 35  (The middle initial "P" = Peter)
James C. Kearney 35
Dennis Oleary 23
Frances Mcloughlin 26
Timothy Fox 24
Robert Lambert 24
Maggie Leonhardt 24
Lizzie Higginson 40
Annie Mcglyn 19
Maggie Fox 40

John Peter Dunne shows on the 1900 Census with a wife and 3 children

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSF4-2RF

Interestingly on the Brooklyn, New York Catholic Church Baptism Records for the daughter Mary A Dunne - Birth Date 27 Oct 1895  - Baptism Date - 6 Nov 1895 - Father Jno Dunne - Mother
Margt Rorke.
God parents listed as  God Parent - Fran  - God Parent M Crowe

The birth record seems to show a date of 30 June 1879, there is a WW! Dravft For Frank Crowe with that birth date. Resides 373 Henry Street Brooklyn King New York. Occupation:- Auditor. Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. Nearest relative was a son Frank Joseph Crowe Jnr. (son) Front Loretta Richmond New York.

Dated Sept 1912

Wonder if the wife Elizabeth had died - she would normaly have been listed as nearest relative  ???

On the WW2 Draft for Frank Joseph Crowe 20 June 1879 - resides 124 Hoyt Street Brooklyn Kings NY. Name and address of person who would always know him is a daughter Mrs Regina Serrenta. 382 Avenue West Brooklyn NY. Employer :- City Collectors Office. Municipal Building NYC.

Wondering if Frank was married twice ?
