I've just come into possession of an original "Diary of Duty & Occurrences of Goodiwindi Police 30/11/1919 to 10/12/1926".

If you think you had a Police ancestor there at that time, I might be able to find him, though the book is not indexed and is difficult to read due to the handwriting.

Basically, it has the name of Police, names of their horses(!), and their duties. Occurrences include their duties such as escort, inspections etc.

I can photograph entries of your Police ancestor if required, though the book is full of their duties so would only do a specific couple.

I hope that one day you see fit to donate the book to the John Oxley Library so that it is preserved for all time, or similiarly donated to the National Library of Australia.

Having said that it would be good to see the book in its entirely transcribed and made into a pdf and placed on a reputable online site for others to use or read in their quests for either police histories , criminology or general social occurances of the period for which the book encompasses.....

Yes Marty, they will end up somewhere someday, not too far in the future. I got a couple of similar books, and once I go through them all, I'll try the NSW Archives or State Library (I live in NSW). About 18 months ago the same source gave me a couple of 1860's books on Cattle Brands which was very interesting and I found some of my ancestor's brands in that book. State Archives wouldn't accept them but the State Library did. I got a couple more Cattle Brand books this time for different years and will give them to the State Library too.

I got these books out of an old garage, the owner saying they were junk(?) and were probably going in the bin!

Marty , just an update on my original posting:

1) The NSW Archives have accepted 2 x NSW Cattle Brand Books for 1869 and 1870 - I handed them in yesterday.

2) The QLD Archives have "EXCITEDLY" accepted the original handwritten 1898 Police Charge Book and 1919 Duty Book. They are organizing a courier to collect them from my house in Sydney.
