I have just found this http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/charles-rogers/genealogical-memoirs-of-john-knox-and-of-the-family-of-knox-ego/page-12-genealogical-memoirs-of-john-knox-and-of-the-family-of-knox-ego.shtml
It says william is descended from a branch of knoxs which settled in Berwickshire in the 16th century. Only it doesnt seem to name the people

I'm finding this all really interesting as I've traced my ancestor James Knox back to roughly this area in 1798, so I'm wondering whether a lot of the Knox's in that area are going to end up related.
Knox's of Bamburgh/Wooler/Scotland?,
Smith's of Beadnell/Berwick-upon-Tweed/Ord
Hastie's of Berwick-upon-Tweed
Vosts of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Poots of Northern Ireland
Hydes of Northern Ireland
