Henry Leake esq., Cork
« on: Monday 28 January 13 21:59 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone help?
I'm trying to find any information about Henry Leake esq of Cork (I don't know if that is the city or the county).  I know that he had at least two daughters who married about 1805, so that means he would have had to have been born about 1780 or earlier. I know that by 1808, he was dead, and that he was probably C of I. I'd be very grateful for any help/suggestions,

Jamesbo

Very difficult given the timeframe you are looking at.
www.nationalarchives.ie  1901 Ireland census has entries for the surname :)

Hi ballydw,

First of all I'd like to say a big thank you for your help and your replies.  I understand the difficulty re the date, but it wouldn't surprise me if Henry Leake would have been mentioned in something like Debrett's Peerage, (as a younger son of a younger son?), but I cannot find any such suitable
reference book. Also, I wouldn't be surprised  if he was mentioned in some sort of legal aspect eg a will or property transaction. I cannot get to Cork myself, and all online attepts have been fruitless, so if anyone can help, I'd be so pleased.

www.landedestates.ie  Included here are the Leake family in rathkeale Co Limerick.
You could also take a look at Peerage.com which has references to LEAKE. Another site is

Hi Ballydw,

Thanks once more for all that you have tried to do for me - unfortunately I have already drawn a blank on all those sites. I've been interested in the Leakes in Rathkeale for quite a while, but I cannot establish a link between them and my Henry Leake. It's all very frustrating! Again, all I can say, is that if anyone can shed any light on this, then please in touch.

Thanks again,

Jamesbo

Hi Jamesbo,

I can't shed light on Henry's daughters but I did find a death notice for him or it may be his
father???

In the Hibernian Chronicle newspaper Monday 27th Dec 1784  last Friday in Blarney Lane,
Mr. Henry Leake, tallow chandler.

A few more Leake entries as follows-

2 June 1827 In Tralee on Monday night , Barry the only son  of Barry Leake, Esq.

4 Nov  1817 on Monday last in Clonakilty in this Co. ( Cork) the lady of Richard B. Norcot Esq.,
and daughter of the late Col. George Leake of Rathkeale Abbey, Co. Limerick

30 May 1823  on Monday morning in Wailliam Street,(William St) Limerick, George Leake of
Rathkeale Abbey in the Co of Limerick Esq.,

2 Aug 1762  Limerick, 29th July on Wed last died of a tedious illness in the 60th year of his age,
Jonas Leake, of Rathkeale, Esq., (buried Rathkeale 29 July)

7 Feb 1771   died in Blarney Lane, Mr. Richard Leake   ( Cork City)

24 May 1804  in Dublin Richard Leake Esq., attorney

Possible Richard & Henry both of Blarney Lane, Cork may be related.

All of above from Rosemay Ffolliott's newspaper index on microfiche at Cork City library

Regards
Mary
