Gold miner from UK died SA info anyone
« on: Saturday 04 June 05 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I know this is vague but its all I have:

Johnathon Holliday from Cumberland went to SA in the mid to late 1800's to I imagine "make his fortune" died circa 1899 of miners typhus (so I am told) at the age of 33, leaving four children and a wife

How do I get any info on this, I doubt his body was brought back to England so no coroners inquest in this country.

Anyone help

If he died in South Africa, there is no death notice that I can see in the South African archives (which can be searched at www.national.archives.gov.za)

 :(

Cumberland: BIRKETT, HODGSON, ROBINSON, TODHUNTER, TOLSON
Angus: DAND, LOW

Surrey: CHADWICK, GARRET
South Africa: JEFFREY, JEFFERIES, BIRKETT, CHEW, COMRIE, WALKER, DAND, MACPHERSON, SMITH

Geoff

Thanks

I notice the names on the bottom of your post have a Birkett, and more importantly a Hodgson both from Cumberland (whre I live) Firstly; I work with a George Birkett who resides in the Maryport area, could he be one of yours he is about 55ish, as for the Hodgson's is this the Workington, Maryport Area?  as my GG Grandmother was a Sarah Jackson nee Hodgson (1838 - 1890) though still needs confirmation.

She was the mother in law of Johnathon Holliday who went to SA, her daughter was Esther Jackson   1867 - 1926 (wife of Johnathon)

Hello Andrew

My Birketts were from the Thirlmere area (Wythburn, Crosthwaite, Keswick) and my Hodgsons from Keswick also: my great-grandfather Joseph BIRKETT (1851-1918) married a Mary HODGSON (1855-1886) from Keswick and lived in Keswick before going out to South Africa with his daughters in the 1890s. I don't have any Sarah HODGSON in my tree at the moment, but I will check further and see whether any of my data could possibly match up with any of yours.

Best wishes

Hi,  I had a similar problem with a great grand father who was a copper miner in the Northern Cape and I only had rumours to go on that he had died in a mining accident.  It took a while for me to find him.  My break through came throught the rootsweb list SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH-L@rootsweb.com.  Found an inscription from his gravestone in the national archive.  Fantastic!  Good luck

died circa 1899 of miners typhus

Not helpful in your search, but the cause of death was probably "miners phthisis", better known as Silicosis.
Caused by breathing in silica dust, generated by drilling and blasting operations.

The only *maybe* i found in the National archives database was the following possible estate file or death notice :

TAB MHG System : 01 Ref : 0/13140 HOLLIDAY, John 1897

TAB indicates that the document is filed in the archives in Pretoria.

Best wishes
