1831 Bovevagh Parish, County Derry
« on: Monday 04 February 13 00:30 GMT (UK) »
Did the 1831  census for Bovevagh Parish survive? If it did, are family members recorded or just the head of the family. I would appreciate any information regarding this. Thank you very much.

The 1831 census for County Londonderry only lists head of household, number of males and females with a breakdown of religion (R.C., Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, other).

Thank you for directing me to Mr. Macafee's site. I was able to easily find 2 of my families in the townland of Ardinarive in Bovevagh Parish. However, their surnames being Barnett(Barnot) and Crawford, I could easily scroll down to find them, but for a family whose surname begins with S, nearer the end of the alphabet, it was taking much too long to scroll through all the Bovevagh Parish names. Is there by any chance a quicker way to access names that begin with letters near the end of the alphabet. Mr. Macafee's website is very impressive. I thank you again for directing me there.

Hi,
If you let me know what name you are looking for I will try to help. I also have a number of Barnett and Crawford marriages in Bovevagh Presbyterian church and a few from Scriggan Presbyterian Church. There was about half a mile between the two churchs.

Many thanks for your kindness! I have several Bovevagh records for my Crawfords and Barnetts from Bovevagh Parish which I'll send shortly in my next posting. Another name that I had hoped to find in the 1831 census in Bovevagh Parish, hopefully in Ardinarive is Spear or Speer. Our family records have both spellings. Although I greatly appreciate Mr. Macafee's site  I found it difficult with my weak computer skills to access names that required so much scrolling down to the end of the alphabet. This is not only my family history but my father's so this is special for me. Many many thanks!!

Hi,
The 1831 census shows no Spear/Speer in the parish of Bovevagh. The nearest name is in the Maghera district which is about 12 miles south.

Here is some of the Crawford and Barnett family history I have. James Barnett married a Margaret Forrest in the late 18th century or very early 19th. Their daughter, Mary Anne Barnett, was baptized in 1820 as a Presbyterian in Bovevagh Parish

This Mary Anne Barnett married a John Crawford probably in Bovevagh Parish because their son John was born or baptized in this parish in the 1840s as a Presbyterian. John's father was an Oliver Crawford also from Ardinarive Bovevagh Parish.

Mary Anne Barnett had a sister Eliza Barnett born in 1820s.

Maragaret Barnett also born in 1820s was very likely from our Bovevagh family

Other names that connect to these families are Blair and a Martha Stephenson

I hope I haven't taken advantage by including too much. Whatever you might have time for.

Many thanks!! caramarie

Once again thank you for your help regarding the name Spear or Speer. I didn't see your message until after I had posted my previous message. I've never heard of this area but will definitely check it out. caramarie

Hi Caramarie,
I see that there are several Barnett families in the townland of Ardinarive listed in the Griffiths Valuation http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ of 1858. In the 1901 census the family seems to have moved to the townland of Templemoyle which is just to the north of Ardinarive. The early marriages are in Bovevagh Presbyterian Church but later marriages are in Largy Presbyterian Church which is closer to Templemoyle.
The Barnett marriages in Bovevagh Presbyterian Church are :-
1824 John Barnett and Elizabeth Canning
1830 Joseph Crawford and Anne Canning
1835 John Barnett and Rose Anne Irons
1843 Robert Allison and Roseanna Barnett
1845 John Barnett and Jane Moore
1847 Adam McFadden and Mary Barnett
1848 Robert Jackson and Letitia Barnett
1853 John Irons and Elizabeth Barnett
1864 Charles Magee and Elizabeth Barnett
1875 Thomas Townley and Letitia A. Barnett

I have a list of headstones in Bovevagh Presbyterian Church but no Barnetts are included. I will list the Crawford marriages later.
