Farrell family Bride Street Wexford
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am new to genealogy and would appreciate any help trying to trace my Grandfathers family.
His name was Michael Farrell and lived in Bride Street, Wexford town. I think the family at 20 Bride street in the 1911 census are his but he left home and moved to Liverpool before the census.
I believe he was born in 1893 and he had another sister known as Cissy?
I cant trace the family in the 1901 census and would appreciate any help or guidance from here.

Thank you.

Do you have details of Michael's marriage ?

A cert should show you his father's name and occupation and probably help to establish a link to he correct family on the census.

that family in 1911 for reference :

  Farrell  household, Bride St.

a possible match for them as Farell in 1901 :

  Farell household, Furlongs Lane

father Patrick is not present but some of the other details match up. Included in the 1901 listing is a son Michael age 8, so born c1893.

p.s. haven't found exactly where Furlong's Lane is located, but it appears to be somewhere close to Bride St. as it's in the same civil parish i.e. St. Mary's.

Thanks Shane,

He was married in Liverpool. The certificate says father is Patrick Farrell, a Dock Labourer.

Shane,

That looks like the correct family in Furlongs lane.
It answers the sister question too.
I think I need to look for the marriage of Patrick and Mary next.

Thanks

that family at Bride St./Furlongs' Lane definitely a good match then

I dont see a good match for Patrick & Mary's marriage yet... there is a Patrick Farrell marriage in 1890, but no cross-match to a Mary that I can see.

Might be worth starting with a birth cert for one of the children to establish Mary's maiden name. The younger children, especially those with less common names usually give better matches - in this case just one likely match for one of Michael's younger sisters on the BMD Index :

  Name: Johanna Farrell
  Registration district:   Wexford
  Event type: Birth
  Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1903
  Volume : 4 / Page : 679

A birth cert from the GRO would show the full details and allow you to check parent's names, father's occupation etc. Mary's maiden name should help the search for her marriage

I’m pretty certain that Furlongs Lane was off of Lower Bride Street leading up to the outer wall of St Mary’s Grave yard.

The old OSI map (extract below) shows a lane with a covered entrance leading off of from Bride Street (between the two E’s of the word STREET) about six houses down from the junction with Clifford Street.

There would appear to be approx 9 – 10 buildings off of this lane and the 1901 census does in fact record 10 dwellings:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001302859/

The scene today still shows a covered entrance about six houses down from the junction – the entrance though is now gated.
