Hi Macapam,
Yes this is definitely what is was when my uncle was born (1926) as my Great Grandfather sent his daughter there to have my "uncle" so no one would know she was pregnant and not married. What a sad story about your Grandmother.

I was born there in 1958 and as far as I know my parents were married.  :o
Would be interested in any information on it though.

Hello!

I have come across this thread while searching for the same information.

The address is listed on the birth certificate of my Grandmother.  Her mother was an unmarried mother, father unknown.  On looking at 1939 records, a resident there was called Doris Jones, who is listed as a certified midwife.

Ironically, my grandmother's grandmother was also an unmarried mother, who was born at 6 Charminster Road, Bournemouth.  Records show that this was a girls refuge.

My Grandmother is now 95 (almost) and I would love to put some of the pieces of this puzzle together for her as she was adopted as a baby.  Her bio mother went on to marry and have more children, who thankfully my grandmother has contact with.

Hi
Doris Jones at 10 Maxwell Road in the 1939 Register has two surname alterations, first to Stevens, then to Field (that second marriage was in Bournemouth in 1967)

So Doris Jones and Sister Stevens appear to be the same person!
In the Midwives Roll, 1958/9 (on ancestry), she is under the Jones name.
Doris Jones, Gestingthorpe Nursing Home, 10, Maxwell Road, Bournemouth, Hants.

Her date of enrolment was 26-11-32.
