Hi again ballydw

I believe the following is May TINEY (who died just a year or so after her marriage).

WHITHAM - May - (married) of Rangiora (Canterbury)

Died:   11 June 1935 - aged 30 years   [bc 1905*]

Place of Birth (as noted on Cemetery record) - Peel Forest, NZ

Link to Christchurch Cemeteries Database >

http://librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/Cemeteries

-----------------------

*  Age at death [30 = bc 1905] could be incorrect  ?

[OR ... if the 1905 death of Ellen TINAY - 41years (given earlier by Twiggy), is the mother of May TINEY, then it may be that she died during or shortly after childbirth, and that the birth registration of May, was overlooked ? ]

Lucy, thanks again, you could be right that maybe May was the last born and may have been born later than 1896. When did she marry & where. :) :) :)

Ellen Tiney died in 1905 in Mt Peel nz.
The last child born to her was Kathleen Tiney Dec 25th 1903 and on the list I have May is listed before her.

Hi

The NZ Death Index gives the following :

1935 / 17449 - WHITHAM - May - 30 Years

------------------

It's possible of course that age "30" might have been mis-transcribed from say "35" or "36" ... (especially if the registry death entry was handwritten).   ;D

[Just noting that the school record for May TINEY (given by KHP earlier), showed a d.o.b. for May of 20 September 1899.  ]

Thanks again Lucy I definitely think you are on the right track and as you say sometimes mistranscribed due to ilegible handwriting.
Just to throw something else into the mix. Mays father Michael Tiney b. 1861 parents James & Julia Hensey in Ireland, possibly Donegal.  Would there be any record for his arrival in NZ think his marriage to Ellen McLeod was c. 1884 in NZ. :)

The newspaper article for the sister states that the parents called for the constable (ie Ellen was still alive).  This was written 13 November 1905.

The death for Ellen was 28/11/1905.

So could be Lucy2.

Hi ballydw

Well, I'll stick my neck out and say I'm 99% sure that May WHITHAM is the former May TINEY (TINAY).   ;) ;D ;D

Annoyingly our NZ Marriage Index does not give us details of the "place of marriage" and if the marriage is not shown online (at the NZ BDM website), then we're not able to deduce (from the online index), the date of marriage.  [Note:  NZ Marriages (online) are only available up to "today's date", 1933. ]

Knowing where people resided can perhaps offer a clue as to where a marriage might have taken place.

From the electoral rolls  (of the nearest dates, only 1928 and 1935 are viewable online)  ...

1928 - Lyttelton (Canterbury) electorate

TINEY - May - 23 Victoria Tce. - spinster

1928 / 1935 / 1938 - Hurunui (Canterbury) electoral rolls

WHITHAM - Isaac Thomas - Hayland - Labourer

The incident was probably the cause of the poor mothers death.

May Tiney  married Isaac Thomas Whitham on July 11 1934 at Registrars office in Christchurch.
She was aged 29 and he was 54 and a labourer.
