Frome Bank, Bromyard
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Please can anyone tell me anything about Frome Bank in Bromyard in 1919?
I understand it was a convalescent home at that time, and would like to know more as I believe that a (distant) relative, a young lady aged about 24/25 was there in the summer of 1919.

thanks for any info,

Lisa

Here's a photo of Frome Bank http://www.francisfrith.com/bromyard/photos/frome-bank-1923_73464/

In 1929, it is listed in Kelly's directory as a private convalescent home run by Cadbury's for the benefit of their staff http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/Bromyard/Kelly1929.html

The papers of the Cadbury family may help you http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=143-ms466&cid=-1#-1

Thanks very much for this.

I'd found the Francis Frith image when looking but I hadn't found any more.
The young lady was working at Cadbury's Bournville in 1911 (on the census) so that would make perfect sense.
Thanks for the links to the archives too.

Hi Bad8587,

thanks so much for posting the photo postcard of Froome Bank.  It's great to be able to see places as they were when relatives would have been there.

There isn't anyone (family) to ask about if there was a medical reason for the young lady in question being there, as she worked at Cadbury's perhaps rest and recuperation would be a possible reason after the war years in Birmingham.

Thank you again,
kind regards,
Lisa

Hi,

Most of the time it appears that people stayed due to Tubercaloses and the need for freash Air, as the wards in the side  of the pictures are open and they could take in the good air of Bromyard. The view looking out would have been very calming.

Cadburies sold it in the later years and it became a Childerns Home.

I have loads of Pictures of FB as it was and before it was Demolished in 1986.

Regards,

Bad8587
