ward and Oakley Birr 1893 need help
« on: Saturday 16 February 13 17:47 GMT (UK) »
I have been working on my family tree for awhile but have only recently started working on my mothers side of the family. I have gotten as far as my great grandmother Josephine ward born February 23 1905 in Glasgow Scotland it lists her parents as John ward a foundry labourer and Annie Ward Maiden name we think is Oakley it hard to read the writing they married 18 august 1893 Birr Kings county Ireland but struggling to find any record of these two in Ireland. any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

The old name for Birr is Parsonstown, which was also the name of the registration district, but I'm not seeing any likely marriage matches on the BMD Index in the district at that time, even for a John Ward.  Ward is quite a common surname....

Closest by date and geographically is one in 1894 in Tullamore district. The town this is based in is just over 35 km ( about 20 miles) east of Birr/Parsonstown.

There are two Oakley marriages listed in Parsonstown district around the right time, but both are male (Thomas 1892 and Patrick 1891).

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe they lied on the birth record and where never married or if maybe I have the name wrong. I might try search names that sound like Oakley. On the record it was Annie that registered the birth and she signed with an X rather than her name. was thinking maybe the registrar could have misunderstood her if she had a strong accent. The registration has Birr kings county Ireland written on it but will try searching parsonstown as well.  thanks

Welcome to Rootschat. The details you've posted are from the Irish civil registration index which you can also view on Ancestry (pay site but many libraries have access) and FamilySearch (free)- https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347. Both those sites have very good search engines to narrow down the choices or do very, very general searches.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Re: ward and Oakley Birr 1893 need help

Don't really see anything under ward but maybe I can look later. Remember the Irish lots of times used the second name for instants my aunt was Margaret Josephine always went by the name Josie. Never knew that till I started looking for records I had 4 aunts who went by middle name.
so annie could be Mary anne Catherine anne or ann or anna.
