1830's Macroom Catholic Church
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 17:09 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the name of the Catholic Church in Macroom around 1830, and whether it is still standing?

The Catholic Church in Macroom is St. Colman's

Thank you so much for your reply Mary.  I have been told that St Colmans wasn't built until 1866.  Do you know if it replaced an older Church?  I need to know which Church was standing in 1837.
Do hope you can clarify this for me.
Many thanks.
Denise

If you are searching for records, all you need is the name of the parish, rather than the church. There was an RC church at the same location as St. Coleman's in the 1830s, and it was part of the parish of Macroom.

Baptism records for the parish go back to 1803, marriages to 1808, although there are a few gaps. The NLI (National Library of Ireland) film references are Pos. 5004 and 5005.

You have your question answered But.... My mother was from Macroom, when following up her ancestry I find that her ancestors who were well rooted in that area were married at small chapels within the Macroom Parish.   Macroom is in the diocese of Cloyne at present and those chapels seem to have kept their own registers.

Thank you Shane and Mary.   I will be searching the records when I visit Dublin in June, and will also be spending a couple of days in Macroom which I am very much looking forward to.
I would, out of curiosity and for my records, like to know the name of the Church or Chapel that was standing before St Coleman's was built, and wonder if either of you know what it was called?

The earlier church is unnamed on the earlier 1st edition OSI maps (c1837), just 'R.C. Chapel' like most other RC churches.

I suspect the earlier church may also have been dedicated to St. Coleman. The Church of Ireland in the town is also St. Coleman's, so there was a historic connection to this saint in the area. There were several St. Coleman's, including a 'Colmán of Cloyne'.

I would refer to the church as RC Parish Church, Macroom town.
