Mystery Wedding Venue
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 17:09 GMT (UK) »
There's not much to go on here, but I hope someone can help me out. I found this photo among others from my late parents' house, with nothing to say whose wedding it was, where or when. The other photos in the bundle related to a family with connections to areas around Leeds and Huddersfield, so it might be round there somewhere, and I'm guessing the date might be around the 1930s. Once I know where it was, and approximately when, I might have a bit of a chance working out if I'm related to anyone here.

Mainly because I'd like to see if I can get the location sorted first. I'm more confident on the dating and already have a few books on the subject, but I'll bear this in mind if I get stuck.

Thanks,
Arthur

I'm wondering if it's a bit earlier, 1920's.

Yes, I'd have said early 1930s rather than late - in fact I nearly put approx 1925-1935.

That sandstone wall and the big stone steps certainly looks like a West Riding location but I don't think you'll get any closer than that with so little to go on.

Somehow, I'm imagining a Methodist chapel, not unlike this one.

Thanks - I'd been thinking Victorian church (C of E) or possibly municipal building housing register office, and hadn't considered a Methodist chapel, but there may be something in it. The details don't quite match Chapel Allerton, but there might be another one similar. However, given the number of chapels in the West Riding....

I suppose what I'm hoping for is that someone might recognise the stone stairs: the width of them suggests it could be a fairly substantial building, and given the number of them up to what is presumably the main door, it could be on a fairly steeply sloping site.

Yes - it's not the Chapel Allerton one but I've seen lots of Methodist Chapels with big wide steps like that. As you say though - there are a lot of chapels in the West riding, as well as a lot of steep streets. It might jog someone's memory though.
