........I have found a Michael 'Mahan', father James Mahan, which would fit with time of Michael's birth - not sure how likely the difference in name would be?

From my experience researching a Michael Mc Mahon, no connection to yours, McMahon/ Mahon/ Mc Mahan and Mahan were used by the same family and interchanged at will in early 1800's. ::)

i came across this site this morning and think killaven may be in killabbon . the author of this site Michael Brennan may be related to the brennan mentioned above in the peace recognance. the name of the site is'' The Brennan family history of co laois ancestry.com''Michael has gone to a lot of trouble to document a lot of the parish records for the area and is a little treasure trove for any genealogist dealing with co Laois .In killabbon i found a James Mcmahon marrying a Margaret Doogan in 1810 and one birth in nov 1828 unfortunately the childs name is illegable. i think this topic should be moved to co laois. regards  Dathai.

Thank you Atmartinas for this. It's very useful to know that these alternative spellings of the name are worth pursuing - it gives me hope!

Hello CMS,
I have just discovered your email in RootsChat concerning your ancestors Michael McMahon and Rose Carbery in 'Killaven parish'.
I believe this parish to be 'Killeaven' (spelling as on Tithe Books) in County Monaghan. I found one Carbery in Drumskelt townland, and two James McMahons in Cappagh and Killigowan townlands.

Michael & Rose McMahon had a daughter called Catherine, who marrieed William Hennessey, and they are my ancestors.
