Hannah Gabb and William Artus
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 14:31 GMT (UK) »
I have managed to trace my Gloucestershire ancestry back as far as 1635, but have been unable to locate any information on the marriage of my ggg grandfather, William Artus of Minsterworth, and Hannah Gabb of Longney. The date would have been about 1822/23, as their first son was born in Eastington in 1824.
I really have searched hard on this one, but it is only recently that I have had concrete proof of Hannah's surname.
Any help appreciated.
Eric

Hi,
I have double-checked the Glos Family History Society marriage records against the Phillimore Marriage records and Susannah's surname is recorded as LOONEY(?) in the Phillimore records.

Hi,
Things are getting more and more complicated!
William Henry ARTUS, son of William & Hannah, a Butcher of Eastington, baptised at St Michael & All Angels, Eastington (Stonehouse), 15th January 1825.
Alfred Paul Artus, son of William & Hannah, a Butcher of Whitminster, baptised at St Andrew, Whitminster alias Wheatenhurst, 20th August 1826.
His brother - Edward ARTUS baptised 8th September 1828.
Eliza, daughter of William & Hannah, a Labourer of Whitminster, baptised at St Andrew, Whitminster alias Wheatenhurst, 6th January 1833.
Her sisters - Hannah baptised 2nd October 1831 & Mary Ann baptised 24th September 1837.
I can't confirm if the Butcher & Labourer of Whitminster are one and the same person.
Hope this helps?
Victor

Many thanks for your efforts, Victor. Well, I'll begin with your first post. William Artus sr. was my gggg grandfather, and he is pretty well sorted other than the fact that Susannah's surname now appears to have been Browning (widow of John Browning of Minsterworth). I think the vicar had had a few when he wrote out the certificate which you can view here http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Marriage%20Wm.%20and%20Susannah.html
His son, William, who married Hannah Gabb was both a butcher and a labourer. Hannah came from Longney. It seems like there may be no marriage certificate, after all. It is possible that they didn't actually marry, which wasn't unknown in those days. Shame, really.
Anyway, thanks again.

Hello,
I also am of the Artus family. William Artus is my 5th great uncle.
You mention getting as far back as 1635
I'm not so far back at the moment if you could give me some clues about William's grandparents? I have written down that his father is also William born 1768. Any help appreciated. Thanks
