Looking for any info on Thomas Goodsir Master Mariner of Scarborough
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 15:53 GMT (UK) »
All I have at the moment is that at St Pauls Exeter in 1822 he married one of our family - Tammy (Thomasin) Tillman (widow).
Thomas was on Pallots, marked as master of the Transfer Brigg  (what ever that might be ?) at Exmouth Goodsir Thos (of Scarborough, Co York ).
I am wondering if the might be on the 1841 census there, or Whitby?

Hello Carole
Yes it was 1822, and Tammy was the widow of Peter Tillman who died in 1816, Tammy's maiden name appears to have been Warren, but that is the limit of my knowledge at the moment.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Best

John

Hi

Sorry - you had already given the date of marriage as 1822 - I need new specs!

Nothing at all on the 1841 or 1851 for either of them and no deaths between 1837-1841 on freebmd so presumably died pre-1837

Goodsir was quite an uncommon surname and there aren't very many entries on any of the English censuses but a few more on the Scottish ones so it may have it's origins there

Thanks for your comments about Barney - he was a little beauty

Thanks for the search Carole
At least I have now found the ship, it is called 'Transfer' built in 1809  in Scarborough for owners Cornwell & Co. 142 Tons
Morning Post London 2nd April 1824 (Ships News) Dover March 31st 'Transfer' Off the port
Master Goodsir, from Charente (France) to London.

Recon wife must have been ashore somewhere, maybe Whitby ??

Good Morning Carole

Have just found an entry in  Baines Directory of 1823 :
Goodsir Thomas Master Marina living at Long Greece Scarborough.

Nearest directory for Master Mariners appears to be 'Whites' in 1840 but no sign of him on that.

Also, from another ex 'Conway' found that the 'Transfer' does not appear on Lloyds List in 1925, so might have been lost in the very bad storms of 1824.

Means poor Tammy was a widow once again, unless she was onboard with him, though small Home Trade ships, I don't think that was the case.

Uhm! where to search next - or yet another of these brick walls!!!

Think that the best would be to search for anybody who has information on Frederick Cornwall 's shipping Co. as it appears that Thomas worked for them for a very long time.

But question please Moderator do I start a new Post for Frederick Cornwall, or do I hope someone might pick up on it from this Post ?

You could start a new post and give a link to this one to explain why you are looking.

Bury and Norwich Post 23 Nov 1825
Yarmouth Nov 21
The Transfer of Scarborough, late Goodser, from Shields to London, was lost on Scratby Sand, on Tuesday se'nnight, and only an anchor and part of a chain cable saved. The next morning, the Two Sisters, Fleming, picked up off Happisburgh a long boat, marked on her stern "Transfer of Scarborough, Thomas Goodser", and on Thursday was compelled to cut her away in consequence of a heavy gale coming on.
