Raymond Temple-Smith or Temple-Purcell Death?
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 16:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi Fellow Rootschatters. I was wondering if anyone would be able to do a look up for me in Watford Library's please as I live in Birmingham. My great granddad died whilst away from home in 1950. He died 14 Sep 1950. I have been told by his sons that he died whilst working on a bridge and items fell from the bridge and injured him. I have tried to look up these newspaper articles or any information to try and support this, but not been able to find anything. He was living in Birmingham at the time.

He also used the name Raymond Temple-Purcell. This name was the more common name that he used.

I would be completely happy if someone was able to try and look up this information. Im sure that there should be a corners report somewhere too which I would also like to try and find if possible please?

Kindest Regards

Andrew

His death was registered as Raymond G Purcell aged 37 in the Watford Registration District

These are all the areas covered by the Watford RD - do you know exactly whereabouts in Herts he died?

Hi, Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply back to you, I thought I would have to save up and purchase his death certificate to prove to myself and know some of the facts of what happened to him. Recently I have been able to save up for myself and purchase his death certificate. It came this morning and this is what it says on his cause of death.

Living at; 64 Woodstock Road, Moseley, Birmingham, West Midlands, England.

Place of death and cause of death; Peace Memorial Hospital, Watford, Hertfordshire, England Died of Shock, and haemorrhage resulting from a lacerated liver and fractured ribs the deceased having the 14th September 1950 been crushed by falling steel plates at the clone valley sewerage works, Maple Cross Hertfordshire, England. P.M; Accidental.

Occupation; Engineer

Informant; R.M. Godman, Deputy coroner for the Watford district. Inquest held 19th September 1950.

Would this help trying to find any newspaper articles do you know please as I have been unsuccessful in the past.

Regards
Andrew

Hi Andrew

That's COLNE VALLEY Water Company.

Subject to a handful of mergers/takeovers and, apparently, now part of
https://www.affinitywater.co.uk

They may have records?

Hi Andrew

If it's any help the main local paper would have been http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/

Should there have been any report of the accident I would think they would have covered it. Might be worth contacting them just in case.

Hi

There maybe another possibility.

I believe that RMGodman [Coroner] was a local (Watford) solicitor succeeded by his son (a lovely man who died far too young 4 years ago) John Marcus Godman.
Established C1879, Broad, Riggall & Godman became part of Bains & Co [Bainsandco.com].
May be worth an email/call to see if any records exist?

Hi Ray and Maddie.

Thank you both for your messages. I will consider contacting them. I have contacted Hertfordshire Archives to see if they have any records what so ever into what happened to him. They messaged me back yesterday saying that they have forward my message to the relevant department and would be in touch soon. I will be back in touch shortly to give you all the outcome of the message.

Kindest Regards
Thank you for helping
Andrew
