Hi Suffolk*Sue,

Many thanks for that. All the info i have is pointing to Elizabeth having been born in 1796 & her 1853 marriage to John Staff has her father as John Simpson,a labourer. Although as you rightly say a Samuel Simpson was a witness at her first wedding to William Porter in 1823.

Elizabeth variously gives her place of birth as Essex in 1841 & 1861, but U K (unknown) in 1871. I'm beginning to wonder if she was born in Fobbing after all!

Also i've just noticed that the Elizabeth Bogue that Louisa Maud found as a possible in 1851 is living right next door to my Laver family in 1841 (transcribed as Louer) with a Helen Bogue a victualler, who is presumably her sister. So although these Elizabeth's are both of the same age, they are clearly different people.

So finding Elizabeth in 1851 is the last chance i have of (hopefully!) finding out where in Essex she was born!

Kind regards

Having tried to marry up any Elizabeth's on 1851 I am no nearer finding her, I did wonder if she is living with a family or even taken on another man's surname till John Staff came along and married her in 1853, apart from trawling the whole of Fobbing and Corringham looking for any likely candidates I can't think of anywhere else to look for her

Her daughter married in St Giles Reg dist, it did occur to me that perhaps Elizabeth might have been in London around 1851 with her daughter

John Staff is very elusive, he might well have been younger than Elizabeth but we have no clues

Just as a matter of interest there  is a Mates Certificate Service for a John Hickey Staff, born Devonport 12/07/1805 employed for 32 years dated 1851, there is no other mention of a John Hickey Staff anywhere else, born Devon but sometimes places of birth are wrong, just a thought.

I suspect Elizabeth and John most probably met in either the White Lion Fobbing or the Bull in Corringham when his boat was in

He could also have died at sea if he was on boats for a living

I know Elizabeth is down as a widow in 1871, but there is a death at sea for a John Staff on 12th November, 1872, no age given.
Port received from - Yarmouth
Ship - Coronella

Are Fobbing and Corringham close to waterways as the burial  registers are littered with "unknown man" found drowned.  :'(

Yes Sue, Fobbing and Corringham are right near the water, in the churchyard at Fobbing there are graves showing men  died at sea or were found washed up in the sea nearby, Fobbing is on the Thames, it is said that in the church the pews were marked with messages from sailors and pirates, how true that is I don't know. From Fobbing the Thames  leads down to Canvey, Leigh,  Southend and out

The only other death that shows an age is 1866 in Poole, John Staff aged 62 which would make his birth 1804 but even then I am not sure.

Thanks for that, am not familiar with that area of Essex.

The John buried in Poole, he came from London, so the burial register says. ;)
