Badge Identification
« on: Thursday 28 February 13 10:03 GMT (UK) »
This photograph shows my grandfather, Ernest Wills 1888-1963. The photograph was taken in 1919. He joined the Royal Navy as a teenager. He was a cook. Can anyone identify the badge which is just above his cuff? My father thinks it may have something to do with being on minesweepers. Details of any useful websites would be appreciated. Thank you.

It might be worth posting in the armed forces section as they will be more savvy with the older uniforms. I only recognize the Long Jacket and I think they are chevrons for service on the sleeve but I might be wrong. I asked my neighbour to have a peep as he is home but he didn't know either ( ironic as we are on a military base  ;D )

I am sure someone in the armed forces section will know right away!

Until 1946, Good Conduct Badges (the chevrons on the left sleeve) were awarded after 3, 8 and 13 years.

So he must have joined up 1906 or earlier?

Thank you. He joined up in June 1906. Finally left the Royal Navy in 1945.

Thank you all for your help. I will add it to his life story. According to one family story he survived the Royal Oak as he had just gone up on deck to have a cigarette.
