41 census or parish register lookup, Clamp of Fersfield
« on: Monday 06 June 05 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me?  I have a Clamp ancestor who I am stuck with!

I have him and his family on the 41 and 51 census in Old Newton, Suffolk.  In 51 he gave his place of birth as Fersfield, Norfolk.

He would have been born about 1791.  Another contact told me he was the son of Thomas Clamp (c 1771) and brother of Henry (1811), but couldn't explain his sources.  The IGI lists Thomas and Henry, but not my John.  It seems a big leap of faith to assume that Henry and John are brothers with 20 years between them, although it is possible with the large families.

If anyone has access to the parish registers and could find him for me that would be wonderful.

Alternatively the 41 census may have other Clamps in Fersfield that may give me a lead.

I would be grateful if anyone could help.
Thanks,
Diane

Thanks very much Sue.

I'm not sure how it helps me at the moment, but I can hang on to the info, and hope for a connection.

Hi Diane,

Having just contacted you about my unwanted marriage cert 1838 for a Jane Clamp (father Thomas) and John Whitrod, watchmaker, I thought I'd have a look for them in the 1841 census, bit hard to find as indexed under Wibroad and her name as June, living in East Harling where John lived at time of marriage.
The enumerator wrote all a's as u  ::):

1841 HO107/775/5 fol.8 p.8
Murket Place, East Hurling, Norfolk  (take as Market Place, East Harling)
John Witroad  45  W. M
Jane        "      40
Esabella  "      15  Dressmaker
John        "      5 months
Mary Beates   25 Dressmaker
all born in county

Hope this helps
Barbara

Hi Cathy,

I doubt if there is a connection, my Clamps are from Fersfield which is in the south of the county near the Suffolk border, and N and S Creake are in the north, but you never know.

The only thing I know for sure is that my John Clamp was born in about 1791 in Fersfield, and that he may be the son of Thomas Clamp.  It is possible that family moved there from somewhere else.  I have not ever seen the parish registers and there is nothing helpful on the IGI.

Good luck and Happy Christmas down under!  :D

Diane

Hi Cathy,

Just looked up the origin of Clamp, and got this:

"Possibly from middle English for clamp, iron band or brace, or a name for a smith who made clamps and braces".

Did you mean Stow in Suffolk, because my Clamps lived not far from there in Old Newton.

I would love to find a connection.  My grandmother was a Clamp too!
