Trying to sort out the numerous family members called Quarterman. Or are they Quartermaine? Or is this a wrong spelling which is complicating matters and sending me round the bend?
James Cherry/Cherrey  born 1791 is the actual family line but they seem to be connected somehow. I just cannot see the wood for the trees. Have got enthralled with Matilda Quarterman/maine who, despite being un married, had lots of children. !841 she was living next door to the Cherrey family !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can some one help me sort out this puzzle please?
Regards,
Josie.

Hi Josie,

I assume that you don't have the Garsington PR ?? - there are a lot of QUARTERMANE/MAINE baptisms/marriages and burials, so some specifics would be helpful (Matilda's rough birth date).

There are less CHERR(E)Ys, but no baptisms or burials before 1831 and only a few marriages, two of which might be of interest (from the OFHS transcription):

15 Apr 1812 - CHERRY James, bach, of Towersly Bucks to Elizabeth COOPER, spin

20 Jun 1831 - CHERREY James, widr to BATES? Mary, spin

Harry

Josie,

I've had a quick look at the burials and found:

19 Dec 1830 - CHERRY Elizabeth aged 47

Which may be the first wife.

By the way - I notice you have an interest in the COBB surname.   If you have any from around Newington, Warborough, Dorchester etc., I may be able to help

Josie,

OK - found Matilda on the 1841 and 1851 census with a birth year almost 10 years different !!

I can't find a baptism for her I'm afraid.   The prints for the early part of the century are nearly illegible, although I think I have spotted all of the QUARTERMAINs.

Many thanks Harry. Explains the Quartermain children whose birth dates were before Sarah Cherry married William Quartermain in 1854. I wondered where the children came from and hane now found that William was married to Ann in 1851.
All cleared up. For your info; Matilda died Dec qtr 1885 aged 73 and in 1871 she was still unmarried and had more children. Would love to get to the bottom of that mystery when I have time. Wonder if they were all with different fathers?
Thanks again for helping me solve the dates and wives.

Josie.

Hello,
I am a descendant of the William Goodenough Quartermain and Sarah Cherry! I would love to fill in the gaps from then on down to the present day.
