Hi Mike

Not sure of course just what info you already have for John Powning STARK's mother, Emma ??

I've never (I don't think) had cause to search the passenger lists into South Australia before.  ;D
But firstly went to the Resources section of the Australian board here and found a link to Government Assisted Immigrants to South Australia where I found a reference to an Emma PUDNEY - Year 1855 (no actual passenger lists available at that site).

Amongst other resources (AUS board) there was a link to "theshipslist"  with transcribed passenger lists to SA (South Australia) - but ships just grouped by year.  Where to start ?  (I'm too impatient to read intsructions.  :D)  However the first ship I selected > "Caroline" from Southampton 11 January 1855 - arrived Port Adelaide, 25 April 1855 > turned up the following :

Single Women

PUDNEY - Emma - 20 years - Domestic Servant - ex Surrey    ???

[Also on this voyage were:  PUDNEY - Stephen N. - 45 - Carpenter - ex Chelmsford, Essex (with a notation :  1851 census - aged 47) / PUDNEY - Lydia (Birkin) / PUDNEY - Stephen Major (13) / PUDNEY - Alice Eliza (11) and (listed under "Single Women" ) = PUDNEY - Lydia Elizabeth (14) Domestic Servant, Chelmsford, Essex - with parents. ]  (Have no idea if the Emma PUDNEY was related to this Essex family ? )

:) wow people still trying to digest all info - many thanks. Emma Pudney/Lindsay/Stark ended up marrying Jacob Jung (30 September 1871) in Tamaru. A daughter Lilly was born in 1876 (date unknown). Jacob was a baker from Darmstad, Hesse he was granted NZ nationalization (29 September 1885) under the name Jacob Young. The info on Emma is all very new - thanks. :)
I have a photograph (prob taken) late 1960 with woman (probably in her late 60s) and her three daughters (mid 30s). The family name was Begbie and she could have been the grand-daughter of Isabella Anne Powning Stark. Have not be able to find out if/when Isabella married. Family lore has it that John Powning Stark's sister (Isabella) remained in NZ and had been in contact in the 1940/50s with my wife's mother Joan Pithey (nee Powning Stark).  ;D Thanks again

Hello,

Just thought I would throw this into the mix-

From "Papers Past"- 'Auckland Star', dated 5.8.1897:

THAMES NEWS

Mr. H. P. Stark for many years assayer at the Bank of New South Wales, leaves here for Greymouth, where he will remain for a month and afterwards proceed to a branch in Western Australia.

Because of the initials, & the Thames and Australian connection, maybe he is related to Henry Powning Stark??

Hello again

Just looking again at the photo of the YOUNG headstone (Temuka Cemetery) > link given in earlier post.

It records also the death of "Ann STARK" - aged just 9 years, on 26 May 1879.   :'(

Searching the online death index (NZ BDM) I can see no "Ann STARK" 1879 or thereabouts ... but there is the following death :

1879 - STARK - Isabella - aged 9 years

[The date of death for Isabella - deduced from the online index - is 27 May 1879. ]

It would seem to me that Ann STARK (9 years) and Isabella STARK (9 years) - died 26 / 27 May 1879, are one and the same.      And my guess is that this child was the daughter of Henry P. and Emma STARK - shown on the NZ birth index (1870) as Isabella Ann Powning STARK.
