Jedburgh Parish Poor Law Records 1852-1874 Kennedy
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 17:27 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Margaret Agnes Kennedy was born in 1861 in Selkirk the daughter of Thomas Kennedy and Elizabeth Wood. Elizabeth Wood died in 1865.
In the 1871 census she is listed as an inmate aged 8 in the Jedburgh  Poorhouse ( Hown Roothouse) and there is also a Thomas Kennedy aged 72, possibly her father.
would anyone with access to the Jedburgh Poorhouse records be willing to see if there is any information about these people?
Thanks in anticipation

Hi

The 1871 shows that Thomas Kennedy as aged 74 b Monta Roxburgh

The 1861 census for Kelso Roxburgh shows a Thomas Kennedy b 1816 Thrito and wife Elizabeth b 1821 England - no children at that time.  Is that the right 1861 entry as it doesn't fit in with a daughter being born in Selkirk in 1861.  Thomas b 1816 was a coachbuilder (employer)

Hello everyone and thank you for the information and advice.
Thanks hdw for the information on the Jedburgh Poor Law CD, that really confirmed a few things to make me pretty sure it’s the 2 people I’m looking for.  The ages match and other things like in the 1861 census his occupation is ‘groom’ (though in other documents he tends to be stated as a ‘toll collector’).  Also Margaret’s age is correct and she went into service and I found her as a servant in Edinburgh in the 1881 census.  Her mother died in 1865 so that’s why the family may have broken up and they ended up in the workhouse.
Margaret had 3 older brothers – James b1851, George b1854 & Thomas b1856.   Thomas may have ended up in a workhouse as well as he would have been only 12 when his mother died but then again they started working at a young age back then.
I will keep looking.
Thanks again
Jenny W
