Looking for William Artus b. Halifax
« on: Monday 18 March 13 11:53 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate the birth of William Artus, probably sometime between 1900 and 1915 in Halifax. The only other  information I have is that he later had a son, Anthony Jacob, who married a Sylvia M. Fail. For some reason, information about the family's history seems very sparse.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Eric,

Do you know when William Artus died as that could help to pinpoint his year of birth?

There is one death in 1954, Halifax, year of birth abt 1910.

What is the source of the place of birth as Halifax?

There are no births in the index in Halifax for that name and period, but are in other parts.
Have a look at freebmd
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks, JJ. I'm afraid that's not him. He was definitely born in Halifax, but this branch of the family has proved to be particularly difficult to follow. William was a particularly common name with the Artus family; there are literally dozens of them! Thanks for your efforts.

But not one born in Halifax!

Best to go one step at a time - have you got the birth cert for Anthony Jacob. Who is the mother, plus her maiden name?
Then you might find the marriage, and tat cert will give you William's father. Hopefully he can then be found on a census, which will establish his place of birth.

The son's marriage seems to be in 1986 (Cleveland) with his given names in reverse order compared to what you have given. If he or his wife are or may be living then their names should not be published on these boards.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

The son's marriage is indexed under two names Jacob and John.  By using John then it is possible to find his birth registration, in Halifax District and mother's maiden name is Mintoft.  But I can't see a marriage between Artus and Mintoft, anywhere.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks, everyone.

JJ. I don't know date of his death, but he is dead.

Lizdb. Source of his birth from his grandson. He hasn't any documentation.

AVM. That was a remarriage in 1986. His wife was Sylvia Fail. They have both since died.

Bumblebee. That could well be an error.
