McFarlane - where are they buried???
« on: Monday 25 March 13 06:23 GMT (UK) »
With the kind help of the wonderful daval57 and Kay99 I have taken this branch of my tree to soaring new heights. I cannot express how marvelous the people are on this forum and the kindness that is shown to help others.

I know this may not be a straightforward and simple question, but how do I go about finding out where my Great Great Grandparents are buried.

This is what I know;
James McFarlane married Agnes Mitchell 14th July 1871 at 88 Main Street Wishaw after Bans according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland.

What religion does that make them?

Agnes died 9th May 1892 at 47 Flemington Row, Cambuslang
James died 9th June 1921 at 94 Lightburn Road, Cambuslang

James's father William McFarlane died 9th July 1892 that is all I have on him except that he was born in Lanark, Glasgow and the family were all born in Wishaw.

Does anyone have any idea where they would have been buried with the limited information I have?

Kindest regards
Liz

Hey daval57, you should have been asleep hours ago  ::)

Again, thank you for your wealth of knowledge. I got half way through filling out the request form and it will not accept my details as I live in Australia, by the postcodes it looks like they only do the lookups for UK residents. Hopefully someone may be able to help through the forum.

Kindest regards,
Liz

Hi Liz,

good morning from sunny Wishaw! It's just above freezing point, so that's good enough  8)

If your ancestors were "Church of Scotland" that would have made them Presbyterians.

I have some of the burial records for Cambusnethan churchyard and cemetery, Wishaw.
If you could suppy maiden surnames of McFarlane wives I could perhaps find some burials for you.
I did find this one -
MARY A. McFARLANE, Cambusnethan, aged 18 months.
Parents - James McFarlane & Agnes Mitchell.
Buried in the old churchyard on 3rd December 1877.

There are quite a few McFarlane burials, if you recognise the following wives let me know -
These 4 were all married to men called William McFarlane. Jane Kay. Ann Gilmour. Margaret Allan. Margaret Sharp.
These 2 were married to men called George McFarlane. Ann Mauchline. Ann Meechan/Machan. (I wonder if this is just 1 person and bad spelling?).
Also have Joseph McFarlane & Janet/Jessie Waugh.

Lodger.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.

Once again Lodger, you are amazing.

Jane Kay married to William McFarlane are my Great Great Great Grandparents
Ann Machan married to George McFarlane are my Great Great Great Great Grandparents (parents to the above William).

Mary is mine, she would have been my Great Grand Aunt.

Thank you also for clarifying the religion.

Kindest regards,
Liz

Liz, another instalment.

This is taken from the Plot Book for the old churchyard at Cambusnethan. The plot book only begins about 1875 -76, before then the gravedigger kept it all in his head - who was where within the plot and who went in last, all that sort of stuff. By luck, there are Day books (like diaries) from about 1861 for the adjoining new cemetery, and these include burials in the old churchyard.

However, this is the record for a McFarlane plot which I am now convinced is the right one for you, despite the strange names! The entry for William in 1892 clinches it. It also gives us the name Joseph to work on, Joseph being a very unusual Christian name (for a Presbyterian, it was thought of as being too Catholic) in those days.

The last recorded owner of the plot was Mrs McFarlane, 134 Stewarton Street, Wishaw.
In the South lair -
(all dates are of burial)
JOSEPH McFARLANE, 40 years. 4th September 1895.
HUTCHISON McFARLANE, 9 months. 10th October 1896.
In the Centre lair -
JANE McFARLANE, 76 years. 11th July 1888.
JANET S. McFARLANE, no age given. 13th December 1928.
In the North lair -
AGNES McCREADIE, 3 years. 29th September 1888.
 - - - -  McFARLANE, aged 3 weeks. 7th January 1889.
WILLIAM McFARLANE, aged 81 years. 12th July 1892.
ROBERT McFARLANE, aged 26 years. 3rd November 1898.
HUTCHISON McFARLANE, aged 17 months. 28th June 1895.
WILLIAM McFARLANE, aged 74 years. 19th December 1919.

Unfortunately, no headstone has survived for this plot.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.

Lodger, I'm not sure if I have missed something here, it is obvious by the information you have kindly supplied regarding William McFarlane and Jane Kay that they are definately mine. You also mention here George McFarlane and Ann who are also mine. Do you have further information?? ;D ;D
