Down Your Way: Wigtown with Brian Johnston
« on: Tuesday 26 March 13 17:12 GMT (UK) »
I have just been listening to a recording I made of the BBC radio programme broadcast over 30 years ago.

Can anyone tell me when it was broadcast?

M.

M., the publishing date for the book by him is showing as 1981, so sometime around then! No.25 on the list on this link www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=Brian+Smith&bi=h&fe=on&ph=2&sortby=3

Brian Johnson made his last broadcast of "Down your Way" on May 24th 1987 from Lord's cricket ground. This was after 15 years and 733 broadcasts.
He chose to leave with 733 under his belt since this was the number of broadcasts made by his predecessor Franklin Engelmann. Sign of my age, no doubt, but I associate the programme more with Engelmann than Johnson.

I've been checking the Radio listings of an on line newspaper. Rather frustratingly they only began to list the location from July '81 onwards.
Cannot find a mention of Wigtown after this date.

Thanks all for your comments.

The cassette tape (remember them?) on which I recorded Down Your Way has another BBC programme on the reverse which I know must have gone out in late 1978 or maybe 1979. Can't be sure all these years later if that means Down Your Way: Wigtown went out around the same time.  >:( Perhaps names from the programme might pin down the date.

The surnames* of the people who appeared in the programme were:

From Wigtown, Mr McColm, who talks on Wigtown history and the Martyrs, Mr Allen who talks about Galloway cattle, Mr Lawson who talks about sheepshearing and Miss McFarlane talks about the quiet town, some landmarks and golf.

From Bladnoch, Mr Nisbett talking about dredging the Wigtown harbour and earlier Bladnoch businesses, such as the "Tattie Mill" and Mr Prize talks about Bladnoch Distillery. Mr Mason is mentioned.

Kind regards, M.

*I have omitted first names in case I breach house rules.

Thanks to the website http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/ which contains listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009, I have been able to find the date I was seeking.

The Down Your Way Wigtown programme was broadcast 6 August 1978 at 17.15 on Radio 4.
