Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this topic, which deviated somewhat from the initial request; I admit to being the cause of this.
As the story unfolded I realised there was a possibility that Mary Ann Scott had married twice and that Robert and Thomas Scott were brothers. (My apologies to the nurse who attended to the registration of the birth of Johanna. It looks as if the details were correct in this case.)
The drowning of Robert Scott in September 1865 between Portobello and Port Chalmers was reported in the Otago newspapers. Although it seems his body was not recovered, his death was registered.
Thomas Scott & Mary Ann Scott, a widow, married in 1866. Daughter Robertina whose birth registration I cannot find, was born about 1868. It would now appear that she may have been named after the man who drowned.
Was it "my" Mary Ann Scott who left her daughter behind in Dunedin in August 1865, while she took off for Wellington? I do not know, but this shall be included in my narrative with the insertion of a question mark here and there.
Again, thank you!
