William Crowsley, born about 1774
« on: Friday 29 March 13 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have always thought that William Crowsley, my 3 x great grandfather, was born in Elstow, about 1774, although I've never found a record of his baptism. 1841 census gives his place of birth as Bedfordshire. However, I have just come across his second marriage to Elizabeth Smith at Elstow in 1797 in Pallot's Marriage Index which says he is 'of Lewes, Sussex'.  I wonder if this means he was working there, it seems a long way away from Elstow in those times.
I realise we shall never know the answer, but wonder what thoughts Rootschatters might have.

From the Elstow PR, marriage 14 Dec 1797 of Wm Crowsley (Lewes, Sussex) to Eliz Smith - by licence - if this was his 2nd marriage it does not say he's a widower. As it's by licence they may be more info in the marriage licence transcript in the library.

Thanks for that, John, now I've got the exact date of his marriage.  I still wonder how he came to be from Lewes, but guess I shall never know!

He wasn't from Lewes, he was at Lewes..... on manouevres !

The marriage licence dated 13 Dec 1797 says he's a private in the Beds Militia, age 21 upwards.
He is to marry Elizabeth Smith, daughter of John, & she is a minor.
Surety was given by John Smith, tailor of Elstow

Another licence dated 19 Mar 1798 for John Millington to Martha Wright of Odell; also is from Lewes, Sussex as he also is a private in the Beds Militia.

From Sir John Burgoyne's book Regimental Records of the Bedfordshire Militia, 1759-1884, On 24th Oct 1797 the regiment marched from Eastbourne to Lewes.

Regards
John

John, that is wonderful! Thank you so much.  What stars there are here on Rootschat - as I said, I really didn't think I would ever know why he was at Lewes!

Yes, I can see that John wasn't going to let it go without an answer!
Regarding the National Archives info, is that still about William Crowsley? Or a relative of his wife Elizabeth Smith?

I have just been checking my tree to add William's marriage date and realise I made a mistake in my original post - he had not been married before marrying Elizabeth - I got him mixed up with his father, who DID marry twice.  I must do better!
