much as today ..... (with the exception of the criminal justice side of things)

A Sheriff's officer would enforce the decisions of the Sheriff made in both Civil and Criminal cases. This could encompass the collection of fines , taking into custody , service of writs seizure of goods and chattells ( english term is bailiff) and ensuring the good running of the court.
