Carrickglass, Longford COI Church
« on: Monday 01 April 13 17:01 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys,

If you had an address of Carrickglass, Longford in 1846, what would have been the nearest COI Church ?

Thanks

Tara

There are two townlands with the name 'CarrickglassDemesne', 144 acres in Templemichael civil parish and 434 acres in Killoe civil parish - although it may be one townland dived across a civil parish/barony boundary. Both townlands are in Longford (town) PLU.

I'll see if I can locate the equivalent COI parish(es), and church(es)...

sounds a little bit complicated for the CofI parishes, at least two others involved (Clongesh, Ballymacormick) besides Killoe & Templemichael....from the Lewis 1837 description of Killoe civil parish :

'...It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Ardagh, and in the gift of the Bishop, divided into Upper and Lower Killoe; the former of which is united to Clongesh, and the latter to Templemichael...'

the entry for Templemichael civil parish :

'..The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Ardagh, united by episcopal authority to the rectory of Ballymacormick, and part of the vicarage of Killoe, denominated Upper Killoe, and in the patronage of the Bishop...'

here's Carrickglass Demesne on the 1st OSI map - in two halves across the parish/barony border.

The nearest CofI church would appear to be the one just north of Longford town in Abbeycartron townland, and both in Templemichael civil parish. The church was,  and looks like it still is, located off church street and about 5km by road west of Carrickglass Demesne townland

Hi Shane,

HA It's not only me confused then !

The record was one that I bought on IFHF

It gives the persons address as Carrickglass, Longford and Parish Templemichael.

I can't locate an actual COI church anywhere near there though.

I know on the Griffiths Valuation in 1855 the family's address was Knockloughlin, which is nearby (ish)

I would read Templemichael parish church as being the one in Longford town. It's the only town listed in the parish.

here's the church I mentioned in c1837

and how it looks now on Google Street view

edit - it's shown as St. John's on the c1890s map

more details in Slater's 1846, which confirms the parish church, on church street 'with a spire'

see : page 382, page 383  (failteromhat.com)

The description is in the details of the town on the 1st page, the address is under places of worship on the 3rd page
