Please could anyone help in my search, I am trying to find the grave of Annie Smith . She was a patient of Bexley Hospital from 1927 until her death on 7th May 1944. I have been unable to find her resting place. Any information would be gratefully received.

Hi Val

If your lady died in Bexley Hospital, might she have been buried in Bexley Cemetery?  Have you tried Bexley council?

Hi Val,

I might be wrong but having lived in the area and in fact gone to primary school opposite the old Bexley Hospital before it shut down, I would guess that either she was buried at St Mary's Church Bexley, or as it was very close to the border of Dartford (in fact it was next to Dartford Heath) she may have been buried or cremated in the Dartford area. I don't think there is a crematorium in Bexley from memory.

Hope this is of some help

Hi Val,

Eltham Cemetery, which does indeed contain the nearest crematorium for Bexley, comes under the responsibility of Greenwich Council.  Contact details can be found here:

Hi Val,

If you dont find that Eltham is the right place then try Dartford, as certainly by the early 60's the hospital was actually in the Dartford catchment area not Bexley, and the records may be with that authority, not Bexley.

Best wishes

Found this site on google, there are one or two good pictures of Bexley Hospial, inside and out. My Aunt died there in 1987 and i well remember visiting her there. Very depressing place.

I agree with Bumblemum, Bexley Hospital was a very depressing place.  My grandad died there, but was taken home for burial.

The cemetary next to the A2 is Falconwood, and that's where grandad was taken, but that's because his widow and family lived close by, and it was their 'local' cemetary.
However, it'd still be worth you having a look there.
