Thank you. I would be quite interested in seeing what Hedworth Hall looks like.

I don't know when 'my' William Black moved in there, or when he moved out again, or whether he actually owned it or just rented it. He was there in 1871 and in 1877, but I have not so far found any more records tying him to Hedworth earlier or later than those dates.

Just reviewing this family again, and would appreciate some help sorting them out.

James Black (1797-1878) married Jane Landells (1796/7-1847) in 1817.
However I think I have two lots of children mixed up. I have
Janet or Jessie, born 1818 in Scotland died 1874 in Jesmond
Mary Weddell, born 1820/1 in Scotland died 1884 in Scotland*
William, born 1822/3 in Scotland, died 1905 in Jesmond
Elizabeth Jane, born 1825/6 in Scotland, died 1828 in Jesmond
Marion Agnes, born 1830/1 in Newcastle, died 1890 in Liverpool
Joseph Ebenezer Landale, born 1830/1 in Scotland, died 1887 in Tynemouth
John, born 1831/2 in Newcastle, died 1888 in London
Agnes, born 1833/4 in Scotland
James, born and died 1834 in Jesmond
Sarah Harrison, born 1835 in South Shields, died 1884 in London
James Gordon Mitchell, born 1838 in South Shields, died 1891 in Sunderland
Catherine, born 1840/1 in South Shields
Gavin Adamson, born 1841 South Shields, died 1869 at sea
I have baptism dates for some of them, but not for those with an inexact year of birth.

*I have seen Mary's (Scottish) death certificate which confirms the names of her parents as James B and Jane Landells.

Then I have two households in the 1841 census:

1841 Census: Barnes, Westoe, South Shields, County Durham
James Black          45  Clerk                 Scotland
Jane Black            45                           Scotland
Jessy Black           20  Dressmaker        Scotland
Mary Black            20                           Scotland
William Black         18  Clerk                 Scotland
Merian Black          10                           Not born in Durham
Agnes Black            7                            Scotland
Joseph Black          10                           Scotland
John Black              9                            Not born in Durham
James Black            1                             Durham
Sarah Black            6                             Durham
Catherine Black       3 months                  Durham

1841 Census: Whitley, Northumberland
James Black         44  Storekeeper         Scotland
John Black             9                                   Northumberland
Sarah Black           5                                   Northumberland
Gavin Black           5 months                     England not Northumberland
Jane Black            40                                  Scotland
Joseph Black        12                                  England not Northumberland
Mary Craig             20                                 Scotland
Johanna Craig      3 months                     Scotland

I can find only one household in 1851, which seems to include some members of both the 1841 households:

1851 Census: Barnes House, Westoe, South Shields, County Durham
James Black              Head Wid 54  Commission agent and tea merchant                 Scotland
William Black            Son Unm 28  Agent chemical manufactory                             Scotland
Gavin Black               Son Unm 10 Scholar                                                 Durham, South Shields
Sarah Black              Daughter Unm 15                                                     Durham, South Shields
Margaret Johnson      Servant Unm 21  House servant                                             Scotland

1861 Census: West Boldon House, Boldon, West Boldon, South Shields, County Durham
James Black                   Head Wid 64  Merchant coals and timber                         Scotland
Joseph E L Black            Son Unm 31  Merchant coals and timber                            Scotland
James Black                   Son Unm 23  Clerk coals and timber                Durham, South Shields
Sarah H Black                Daughter Unm 25                                             Durham, South Shields
Joseph Landell                Visitor Unm 27  Commercial traveller, drapery goods         Scotland
Margaret Davidson          Servant Unm 20  House servant                  Northumberland, St Laurence
Elizabeth K Stephenson    Servant Unm 15  Kitchen maid                     Durham, Anfield Place
Note: Joseph, son of Joseph Landalls and Margaret Telfer, was baptised in New Monkland on 17 March 1833

It would all be simpler were it not that I am fairly sure that Mary Craig is Mary Weddell Black! She married John Craig in Glasgow in 1838 and had two daughters, Jane and Joanna. John then died and Mary married John Noble in 1849 and had seven children including Mary Weddell Noble, born 1852. Jane and Joanna are listed in the 1851 census as John Noble's stepdaughters.

I have all the relevant census records for the parents and all of the children except
Marion Agnes in 1851 (she married Luke Bruce in 1850. He was a ship captain so they could have been at sea together)
Agnes after 1841
Catherine after 1841
Gavin in 1861 (he was a ship captain and may have been at sea)

So can anyone point me at any records that might help me to sort out who is who, and whether this is all one family or two families muddled up?

Interesting thought - thank you for that. He was associated with Cookson's Chemical Works at one time, according to his obituary.
