Isabella Rofs/Ross? where did she come from?
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 12:25 BST (UK) »
I am finally retired and can now spend time on my tree....and am picking up where I left off some while back where in fact I gave up!! What an admittance!  :)

I have had such difficulty trying to find this lady who is my GGmother and having moved to Scotland and finding out that both  my mothers parents came from here.

I so want to find my GGmother and intend to visit Invergordon which is where my mother said she came from. Apparently she moved down from there to York, speaking only Gaelic, and worked at the Royal York Station hotel when she met my GGfather Henry William Palfreeman.

They married 27 Dec 1876 and she was 24 years old he was 25.

Her father is called Peter Rofs and was a tailor, and am then wanting to try and find him and his relatives...

I previously searched and found details of several but this time round I cannot seem to find anything close, there are so many Isabellas or variations. I have no address for her or parents, I do not know Mum's name.

Her signature on the MC isnt Rofs but looks like Roso ??  ::)

Can anyone give me any leads please??

Thank you!  :) :)

would it help giving you the names of their children as  think most named after their parents/brothers/sisters etc...  Hephzibah Pool, Margaret A, Isabel, Jessie, John, Lily, Sophie B, James Ross, George Henry, Francis Ross, ( me Mum said they had 13 but only found 10)
Ross, McComas & Munro - Ross & Cromarty, Redshaw, Palfreeman, Robson & Marshall -Yorkshire, Broun/Brown & Mackenzie - West Lothian, Wood - Kent, Hartley- Lancs, Deacon - Northants

Isabella Rofs/Ross? where did she come from?

According to the 1881 census image - Ross  which would be Ross & Cromarty

Birthyear shown as 1854

There is this 1861 entry for Rosskeen - Ross & Cromarty but Peter was not a tailor in 1861 but he was in 1851 - see below.  All b Rosshire

Peter Ross 60 b Fearn ag lab
Margaret 54 b Kilmuir
Isabella 8 dtr b Rosskeen
Rosskeen ED 5 Page 5 Line 21

Rather elderly parents but in 1851 their only child was Lilly aged 7 and Peter's occ was Tailor!!

I noticed in the list of names that Isabella had a daughter called Lily.
This Peter Ross is showing as a Tailor.
According to the IGI, the child named Lily was  born in Fearn, Ross and Cromarty on 24 Aug 1843, the child of Peter Ross and Lily Munro

If the ages of the parents iare correct, I don't expect they will be Isabella's parents, and I cannot find them again on a later census?

1851: Saltburn, Rosskean, Ross and Cromarty

Peter Ross   50  Head b Fearn. Occ Tailor
Margret Ross   Wife 48 b Kilmuir
Lilly Ross   7   Daughter b Fearn

EDIT:
CaroleW's and my post crossed over.

CaroleW.
The un named child born 1802 to David and Janet....
It must be a submitted entry as no child can be baptised without a name
Probably a death of an unbaptised male infant, taken from the Mortcloth and converted to a birth.

Thanks Ann that could be the right explanation as both birth & baptism date are the same so probably an infant death.

When I first saw it - I didn't notice the dates were the same and initially wondered whether the name was indistinct on the original and could not be deciphered for transcription

You are probably looking at a "long s" which looks like an f and used in the middle of a word. Long f followed by a small s is basically just an old way of writing a double s.

The signature which looks like Roso once again would most likely be meant to be Ross, you have probably misinterpreted the second s as an o. I can see that this could easily happen especially if she was not used to writing her own name (as was often the case) she may not have formed the letter very well.

You can post both examples here if you wish to second some second opinions.

Moonstar, welcome to the downhill slope!
Ross's are ubiquitous in that neck of the woods, I have some myself. Try a post on these websites, somebody must know your Ross's,
