MacNeill (Gigha & Cara & Islay)
« on: Saturday 27 April 13 21:42 BST (UK) »
I have a list of the above surname dating back to c1742 to a Neil MacNeill. Placenames mentioned are:

Ardachy, Ardminish, Drumyonebeg (Gigha & Cara), Kilchoman (Islay), Campbeltown, Killean & Kilchenzie & mainland areas such as Glasgow & Fife further down the line.

These are derived from a family tree I was doing a while ago for someone who I have now sadly lost touch with & other's are as well to make use of the info. I have gathered to date.

You can send me queries and if I can link it with what I have I will forward my info.

If interested some of the names are (all surname MacNeill):

Alexander, Archibald, Barbara, Catherine, Donald, Duncan, Euphemia, Hector, James, Janet, John, Lachlan, Malcolm, Margaret, Mary, Neil.

Other surnames associated (through marriage) are:

Cathcart, Galbraith, McGeachy, MacTaggert, Ferrier, Laing, Marshall & Smith

I am interested in a Lachlan Mcneill married to Margaret Mcgeachy in 1840. He was born about 1815 in Scotland and his father may have been Neil. Can you help?

Hi Poppy,

The only info. I have on McGeachy is:

Edward McGeachy b c 1841, died 04 Dec 1888 married Barbara MacNeill 27 Dec 1863 in Ardminish, Gigha, Argyll, daughter of Malcolm MacNeill and Catherine MacTaggert.

Barbara was born 28 Sep 1831 in Ardachy, Gigha & Cara, Argyll.

Child of Edward McGeachy and Barbara MacNeill is:
Elizabeth McGeachy, born Abt. 1872; died 21 Feb 1899.

Sorry I don't have who you are looking for but there is a chance of a connection with Edward.

If you have any information that you care to share   I will greatly appreciate it

I would assume you have this (Archibald MacDonald & Catherine MacNeill) from your visit but good for other root hunters:

My progenitor Neill McNeill left Gigha on June 28, 1739 for the Cape Fear area of North Carolina.  He boarded the Thistle and landed in North Carolina in October.  Neill died in about 1764 and had sons Roger, Henry, and Harry and daughters Catherine, Margaret, Flora, Mary, and Ann.  I have evidence that his brother was Taynish Donald McNeill.  Donald Taynish McNeill descendants included Anna Mathilda McNeill Whistler a.k.a "Whistler's Mother".  Any information on this family in Gigha is greatly appreciated.
