Hi keltic,

The earliest "MacNeill" I have is a Neill b c1742 so for that reason I am unable to help with that particular line.

I am of the belief your MacNeil(l)'s (with 2 l's) are most definitely from around Gigha & Cara, Islay & surrounding areas of Argyll.

I note you have a relative "Taynish Donald McNeill/Donald Taynish McNeill"

Taynish is a different area in Argyllshire which is quite a distance from the "Isles" of Gigha/Cara & Islay.

I have submitted a DNA sample to Family Tree DNA and the results are that I am descendant of the Taynish Scot bloodline also known as the Norse or Viking group.  In addition, there is much evidence that the Taynish Scots of Cumberland County NC came from Gigha in the period of 1739.  I am hopeful that some church records in Scotland can confirm these items.

Are you referring to the surname MacNeill as "Taynish Scots"?

If so, I have no doubt they may have had issue/family/relatives on Gigha but the "Taynish" would suggest an earlier descent from Taynish (which isn't an island) .... "Hector Macneill of Taynish purchased Gigha in 1590"

I have NO family connection with the info. I have...................gathered while doing a family tree for someone & lost touch before it was finished i.e. I am as well to let anyone connected have the use of it if they recognise anything relevant.

Within Family Tree DNA there are numerous surnames that have been included in the "Taynish" blood line.  Some have roots in Gigha and some do not.  There was a Hector of Taynish who was the great grandson of the Hector of Taynish that you mentioned.  His brothers were Daniel, Archibald, Neill, and one sister Margaret.  Daniel went to Cumberland County North Carolina and is well documented there.  His bother Neill emigrated in 1739 with Daniel and may be my progenitor.  Neill left a will in 1764 that mentions sons Roger(this is my family), Henry, and daughters Catherine, Margaret, Flora, Mary, and Ann.  His children could have been born in Gigha.  Historians in Cumberland County NC have Daniel as being born in Gigha.  Hector of Taynish had a son named Roger.  My Roger and Hector of Taynish's son Roger are the only Roger McNeills in this period (late 1600s early 1700s) that I can find which prompted me to inquire in Gigha.

The era you are researching is way beyond what I have.

I have not checked into this site.  I will see if old Neill might have some records available.
