Ardstraw Co Tyrone and the QUIN family
« on: Sunday 28 April 13 05:37 BST (UK) »
hello
I'm looking for information about the above town and perhaps anything about Owen and Catherine (Nee McSorley) who were form Ardstraw and came to Australia in 1841, at 28 years of age.

Owen's parents were Terrence and Sarah and Catherine's were Thomas and ? Mary

Thank you, any guidance or suggestions well appreciated
Meegan

Thank you for that information, Shane. The town is very close to the border. My Quins were Catholics which seem to be the majority of the local inhabitants as well. I wonder why they left?

Cheers

Hi there,

Ancestry has a partnership arrangement with the NSW State Records Office.  Currently on Ancestry there's the images of the individual landing papers for both Owen and his wife, arriving Sydney NSW Australia 9 August 1841.  Of course, Ancestry is often available at public libraries.

Among the details are such bits of information as to the name of the person "certifying the Registry of Baptism"  (ie the person validating their Baptismal Certificates supplied as a form of ID as a requirement for emigrating).   Would that depth of detail be of any help to the Irish RChatters helping on this thread?   I am NSW centric, and basically I am very much one drowning when it comes to trying to help anyone on the non Aussie boards  :-[

The first link doesn't seem to be working  :-\

There's a better site for Griffith's Valuation with scanned images of the printed pages and maps- it also allows searched by name or place:

Thank you all for the wonderful information!

JM - I have copies of the immigration papers from NSW Records, thanks so much.

And the askIreland website is great, aghadowey
Found both families in the area I thought they were. Read some more on Griffiths Valuation - it says it was published for Tyrone in 1851 by which time Owen and Catherine had been in Aust 10 years. Owen's name appears in the Valuation - I'm wondering, was the actual valuation done many years before it was published perhaps? I understand that it isn't an uncommon name. But it does give the owner of the lands name for McSorley and Quin so more investigation

Thanks everyone - more than I've ever found before!

It's unlikely that his name would have been listed in Griiffith's so long after he left for Australia. Probably just a different Owen Quinn.
