Parishes on island of Bute
« on: Monday 29 April 13 17:47 BST (UK) »
Hello.

I am very confused about Bute and Buteshire and am trying to determine the parishes that existed on the island of Bute for the censuses from 1841 onwards.

I am obviously being very stupid.

Is the parish of Kilmory on Bute island or was it on Arran island (which perhaps, would have been classified as Bute)?

My ancestors information for the 1851 census states that they say they were born at Kilmore.  As much as I can make out there is no parish called Kilmore there but Kilmory is part of Bute.  The more I try to fathom out which is correct the more I get confused.

What were the names of the parishes on the island of Bute for 1841/1851 and onwards please?

Yours NG.

Hi Gadget.

Thank you for that information.  I spent ages trying to fathom out why I could not trace some lines on Bute until I realised that Kilmory with Kilbride - I think - is Arran.  It makes more sense now.

hi Northerngirl
I had the same problem, looking for folk on Arran which today is in Ayrshire but in the 1800s and early 1900s was in Buteshire.
there is a Heritage Museum on Arran and they have a Genealogy Department , that can be helpful.
http://www.arranmuseum.co.uk/geneaology_section.htm
there is also a Buteshire website that may be of interest to you !

Hi Elinga.

My interest starts with the family on Islay for 1841.  By the time they move to Bute my William Kirkland is described as being born at Kilmore - I did wonder initially if there was a transcription error, but there was not.  It looks a lot like Kilmeny and I hoped that was what had originally been documented.  I  have a copy of the census from ScotlandsPeople.  I think the enumerator must have heard Kilmeny as Kilmore.  I know that William was born at Kilmeny as well as some of his children.

Thank you for your comments.
