John Steel married Mary Neilson 1860s
« on: Sunday 05 May 13 02:37 BST (UK) »
Some time ago, I posted questions about a John Steel who married a Mary Neilson in Lanarkshire, Scotland, somewhere around 1863. Now I'm trying to find out the name of John's parents.  John was born in about 1806, I think.  Is there anyone else who is tracing this family tree? I know that Mary Neilson was the daughter of John Neilson and Margaret Baird. Any leads would be much appreciated.

Hi there

Are you sure about that ~marriage year of 1863? That would make John around 57-ish at the time?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,525734.0.html
A four paged topic started in 2011, which includes the following:

Your Gt Grandfather b 1836 Glasgow, believed to be son of John Steel and Mary Neilson
married  Jane OWENS, and had issue:
Your Grandfather, Robert Neilson STEEL, b Lancashire

Someone found:
John Steel married Mary Neilson 26 Jul 1831 Barony, Lanarkshire, her father listed as John Neilson
children of John and Mary;
Margaret Baird Steil [sic] born 7 May 1832 Barony
Mary Steel born 7 Dec 1833 Barony
Marion Steel born 24 Jan 1835 Barony
John Steel born 19 Aug 1836 Barony
Jeanie Steel born 22 Apr 1838 Barony
Isabella Steel born 30 Jan 1840 Barony

Some one said:
Going back past Robert Neilson Steel's parents, John Steel and Jane Owens, his mother was Mary Neilson, daughter of John Neilson who was the brother of James Beaumont Neilson. John Neilson was in my opinion equally as important a man,and has an interesting history too,and was very wealthy.

And you asked of a newly found  relative & family researcher:
"Do you know the occupation of the John Steel who married Mary Neilson? and do you know the name of that John Steel's father and mother? Do you know where those earlier family members lived? Was it Lanarkshire, Scotland, as I believe it was?" who replied:

"in answer to your last three questions, yes, yes and yes" and was going to privately communicate with you.

If that list of children for John STEEL and Mary NEILSON is right,  the naming pattern suggests his parents could be named John & Mary.

Cheers

Thank you AMBLY for the information.
The marriage date of 1860s is wrong. I now know that John Steel, who married Mary Neilson, was born in 1806 and they married in 1831, as you correctly stated. John was a banker/accountant and also a shoe maker whose business did well enough for him to fund the building of the Govan Railway.
His son, John Neilson Steel, was born in 1836 and married Jane Owens in 1858. Their eldest son, Robert Neilson Steel was my grandfather and he was born around 1858-60, I believe.
It is the parents of the John who married Mary Neilson that I have been unable to trace.
once again, thank you. Every little piece of the puzzle helps.

Yeah, seems you are connected to our Neilson family.

Hope you all are well.

In case you have not found John STEELs parents, they were John STEEL and Mary McNEILLAGE.

 :)

Thank you so much for that information, Mk2_Zephyr
I haven't been working on family history for a while but your message came through via my emails and I'll now be able to file it with my other family information.
How is it that you are connected to the Neilson family?
Cheers

Hi Did the Steels attend boarding school in Ayr? It looks like it was run by a relative of Mary Baird.

Correct.

Some interesting family people in the school and boarding house over the years.   ;)
