I am researching the Harris family and have reached Charles Pestell Harris who married Sophia Elizabeth Sumpter 21 Jan 1830 in Wingfield, Suffolk (according to BTS).  I would like to verify the birth/baptism of said Charles Pestell Harris and his parentage.  They went on to have at least 9 children between 1831-1847.  Any help would be appreciated

There are various men of this name, presumably connected.

Was yours the Charles Pestell Harris of Newnham, Cambridge (attorney) who had a son Charles Sumpter Harris (looks promising given Sophia's maiden name) and died at Newnham on 8 March 1849? His estate was valued at some £30,000.

Not sure whether this is the same generation, but articles of clerkship dated 1810 & 1813 show Charles Pestell Harris of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire as a son of William Harris of Great Haywood, Staffordshire, miller, and a nephew of Ellis Shipley Pestell (gent, decd) late of Ashby-de-la Zouch.

Charles Pestell Harris, aged 55, of Cambridge, was buried at St Andrew, Histon, Cambs on 14 March 1849.

On that basis his birth can be expected to be about 1794.

Charles pestell Harris was one time town clerk of Cambridge, and appears to have been involved in some sort of court case against the council

Yes he seems to have sued them for compensation for loss of office when they terminated his appointment, though earlier in his tenure he himself was challenged in the courts over whether his appointment was valid :)

Yes, Charles Pestell Harris was a solicitor - I would be interested to see more details regarding his final estate of £ 30,000 and of his court case with the local council - could you oblige avm228?  Now we know that he was born around 1794 in Newnham can anyone access that parish's baptism records as I would like to know his parents and where did he get the middle name of Pestell?

We don't know that he was born in Newnham - that was where he lived when he died.

The articles of clerkship which I mentioned earlier in the thread name his father as William Haywood Harris of Great Haywood, Staffordshire, miller and his uncle as Ellis Shipley Pestell, which suggests Charles' mother's maiden name was Pestell.

Amended to correct William's surname.
