John Duncan Gray - last seen London 1911
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 22:42 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to find out more about Great-Uncle John Gray, after 1911.
I'm posting on this board because the last bit of info I have is London - 1911

I have his parents and all his siblings, and their marriages, deaths etc
I have his birth 1879 in Co Waterford, Ireland

1901 Census .. he's in Dublin, single, Telegraphist in GPO

1911 Census .. he's in London, single, boarding in Southwark (Doddington Grove), Telegraphist.

I have no idea whether he married or not.
I have no idea when he died or where.
There are rather too many John Grays to make buying Certificates feasible (at least to start!)

Any suggestions as to the best leads to follow? And how?
I know there's Newspapers, Electoral Rolls ... difficult enough in a small city like Dublin, nightmare in a big place like London.

All ideas gratefully received and mulled over.

regards eadaoin

Thanks, groom
I wondered about that one.

There are 2 others that sort of fit .. Wirral 1951 and a Yorkshire one in 1957, but the Islington one is the likeliest.

And if I bought the Cert, would I know it's my John D?  I think I'll have to get the Cert anyway.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a Will. Last year I looked in the Indexes for a different GRAY 1940-1950, but keeping an eye open for John. (I suppose if there had been a John that I knew wasn't mine, I might not have noted him.)

Hi, I cant see him in the probate records. There is a John D Gray in the British Postal Service Appointment Books appointed 9th March 1894 as a Tel learner, Dublin.

I'm not sure how you would know for certain if it was your John D Grey as the person registering the death probably wont be a relative unless he married after 1911. I suppose if the D turned out to be Duncan and his occupation telegraphist you could be 90% certain.

Added: This looks like his marriage following on from Claire's post:

Marriages Dec 1913

Gray    John D                Lambeth    1d   850
Smyth Eileen M         Lambeth    1d   850

Claire
that looks very promising - enough to be worth buying their marriage Cert - which I think is 1913 in Lambeth. Thank you so much!

edit: SNAP groom! thanks. Will get the marriage first, I think ?? ...

I cant see any children Gray with a mother Smyth, but there are a possible two with mother Smythe - one born 1920 Southwark and one born 1924 Kensington. It might be worth noting their names as they may be mentioned on the death certificate if they registered the death.

Hi

In the last entry 1939 at 97 Queen Alexandra Mansions, there is Eileen Margaret senior and an Eileen Margaret Gray Junior, a possible daughter maybe.

The Eilleen margaret  Gray  jnr   mentioned   in 1939 would have  to  be  at  least 21    to be  on the electoral roll, and if she's  on earlier  rolls   born 1918  or earlier
